Last evening, members of the Ocean View Police Department joined the community at Georgetown Circle for the International Overdose Awareness Day event to remember lives lost, support families and friends, and stand alongside those affected by addiction.

Thank you to everyone who came out and to atTAcK addiction for sponsoring this meaningful event every year. Your continued dedication brings people together, raises awareness, and offers hope.

To our Ocean View residents struggling with substance use: you can come to the Ocean View Police Department for help. You do not have to face this alone or know where to begin. We are here to listen, treat you with compassion and respect, and help connect you with treatment and support resources. Families concerned about a loved one are welcome to reach out, too.

Asking for help takes courage. Whether you are struggling, supporting someone in recovery, or grieving someone you love, you are part of this community—and you matter.

💜 There is hope. Help is available. Our door is open.

🔒 LOCK IT. SECURE IT. KEEP OCEAN VIEW SAFE.

Ocean View is consistently ranked among the safest communities in Delaware—but maintaining that distinction requires everyone’s help.

Recently, several residents have reported thefts from unlocked motor vehicles. Communities outside Ocean View have experienced similar incidents. An unlocked vehicle or unsecured home creates an easy opportunity for crime.

Before turning in for the evening, please make it a habit to:

🚗 Lock your vehicles
🔑 Remove keys and valuables
🏠 Close garage doors
🚪 Lock your doors and windows

If you will be away, arrange for a trusted neighbor or friend to watch over your home.

Ocean View residents may also register for the Ocean View Police Department’s free Residence Check Program. Anyone living in Ocean View is eligible to participate.

💜 INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY 💜

Overdose deaths and substance abuse continue to plague our community. During the past five years, Delaware lost 2,231 people to drug overdoses:

• 2021 — 515 deaths
• 2022 — 537 deaths
• 2023 — 527 deaths
• 2024 — 338 deaths
• 2025 — 314 deaths

Each number represents a person—a family member, friend, neighbor, or loved one whose loss continues to be felt throughout our community.

Please join Attack Addiction, Delaware Goes Purple, and the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health tonight, August 26, at 7:00 p.m. at The Georgetown Circle for International Overdose Awareness Day.

The event will include community resources, support services, and a candlelight vigil. Come out and support those in recovery, stand beside the survivors and families affected by substance use disorder, and remember those who have been lost.

Together, we can help eliminate stigma, encourage treatment and recovery, and remind everyone struggling that they are not alone.

For more than 30 years, the Ocean View Police Department’s Senior Check-In Program has provided safety, reassurance, and companionship to senior residents who live alone. Participants call our Senior Check Hotline each day, allowing us to confirm that they are safe and doing well. Our officers also make personal visits because we believe a friendly face and genuine conversation can be just as important as a telephone call.

Over the years, this program has created many lifelong friendships and meaningful bonds between our officers and the senior members of our community. These relationships remind us that community policing is about much more than responding to calls—it is about knowing our neighbors, earning their trust, and looking out for one another.

Programs like this help keep Ocean View safe and demonstrate the true value of local law enforcement. Our officers do not simply serve the community—we are part of it.

If you or someone you know is an Ocean View resident who lives alone and could benefit from the Senior Check-In Program, contact Russell Carter at 302-539-1111, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents may register at the Ocean View Police Department, or an officer can visit their home to assist with registration.
