Another successful Bike Safety Checkpoint 🚲

Last night, OVPD held its annual Bike Safety Checkpoint. Lt. Burton, M/Cpl Dalton, and M/Cpl Caselli assisted with installing free bike lights to all the passing cyclists that needed a set, along with other goods like Files of Life and rubber police ducks! 🦆🚓

A special thanks to Amato's Pizza for donating a pizza to feed our officers during the event! 🍕

🏃‍♂️🔥 OVPD Supports the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run 🔥🏃‍♂️

Last week, Ocean View Police Department Chief Ken McLaughlin and Master Corporal Brian Caselli joined hundreds of law enforcement officers from across Delaware as the 40th Annual Delaware Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Delaware kicked off at the Delaware-Maryland State Line in Fenwick Island. Together, officers carried the Flame of Hope through Sussex County and across the First State in support of Special Olympics athletes.

The three-day relay concluded on Friday as law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes carried the Flame of Hope into the University of Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center, officially opening the 55th Annual Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games. The Torch Run serves as a powerful symbol of inclusion, acceptance, and the strong partnership between Delaware law enforcement and the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Delaware.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the signature fundraising and awareness event for Special Olympics Delaware, with officers from agencies throughout the state volunteering their time to support year-round athletic training and competition opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

OVPD would also like to give a special shout out to all of the athletes, coaches, and families of the Sussex Riptide Team for their outstanding performance and positive attitude displayed throughout the Summer Games. Your determination, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm make our community proud.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone in our community who supports Special Olympics Delaware through donations, volunteering, attending events, and cheering on these amazing athletes. Your continued support helps create opportunities that change lives and demonstrates the very best of what our community represents.

OVPD is proud to stand alongside our law enforcement partners and Special Olympics athletes as Guardians of the Flame, helping carry the message of hope, inclusion, and opportunity for all.

As we enter the busy summer season, the Ocean View Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes and fatalities on our roadways. Whether impairment is caused by alcohol, ma*****na, prescription medications, or other drugs, the consequences can be devastating.

The decision to drive impaired can result in the loss of a driver's license, significant fines and court costs, mandatory counseling, increased insurance rates, and even jail time. More importantly, it can result in serious injury or the loss of innocent lives.

If you plan to drink or use any substance that may impair your ability to drive, make arrangements for a designated driver, utilize a ride-sharing service, or call a friend or family member for a safe ride home. Together, we can make our roads safer and ensure everyone enjoys a fun and safe summer.

Drive Sober. Arrive Alive.

Today is the day! The Eastern Leg of the Delaware Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics takes place along Route 1 northbound from Fenwick Island to Rehoboth Beach. Runners will depart Fenwick at 3:30PM and carry the torch up the highway until the reach the kickoff ceremony at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at 7PM!

PLEASE USE CAUTION if you’re driving near the event path. We will have the right lane of Route 1 blocked off near the runners. And please feel free to come out and cheer on Delaware’s Finest by standing along the shoulder of the highway, or joining us for the ceremony at the bandstand!

Members of OVPD are joining together with other officers from throughout the state for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Delaware (SODE), and we could use YOUR help in supporting our SODE athletes!

🚨 SLOW DOWN. MOVE OVER. 🚨

Every traffic stop, disabled vehicle, crash scene, and roadside service call places first responders, tow operators, and stranded motorists just feet away from moving traffic.

Delaware's Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when approaching an emergency vehicle, law enforcement vehicle, tow truck, utility vehicle, or other authorized vehicle displaying flashing lights on the shoulder. If you cannot safely move over, you must slow down significantly and proceed with caution.

Too many police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow truck operators, and highway workers have been seriously injured or killed while simply doing their jobs along our roadways.

✅ Move over when safe to do so.
✅ Slow down and stay alert.
✅ Give roadside workers and motorists the space they need to stay safe.

A few seconds of caution can save a life.

Together, let's make Delaware's roads safer for everyone.
