55 Freeway Project Caltrans and OCTA will add one regular lane and one carpool lane in each direction of SR-55.

SR-55 is one of the most heavily congested freeways in Southern California. The average daily traffic is 261,700 vehicles per day and traffic is expected to increase with future demand. SR-55 is a vital corridor connecting Orange County to Riverside and San Bernardino counties and is a major route for accessing key business centers, John Wayne Airport, major shopping destinations and beach cities.

UPDATE: The ramp is now open.

Crews have taken an emergency closure of the southbound Edinger Avenue off-ramp for flooding mitigation. Please follow posted signage and traffic safety elements in the area. An update will be shared once the ramp reopens.

WHAT:
Crews are preparing to demolish and reconstruct the center median of SR-55 between I-405 and I-5 to accommodate a new carpool lane. As part of this work, crews will shift northbound SR-55 traffic onto newly constructed lanes. Intermittent nighttime lane and ramp closures will be required.

🔸 PERMANENT ON-RAMP CHANGE 🔸
The northbound McFadden Avenue on-ramp will be permanently restriped as part of the traffic shift.

Once the new striping is in place, motorists using this on-ramp will only be able to access northbound I-5. Access to northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5 will no longer be available from this on-ramp. Motorists traveling to northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5 should use alternate routes.

This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen operational issues.

WHEN:
9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, beginning as early as Monday, Oct. 26 and continuing for approximately two weeks.

Work is underway to reconstruct the southbound (SB) SR-55 Dyer Road loop off-ramp, which requires an extended closure of the ramp as well as the inside lane on the SB Dyer Road on-ramp.

The off-ramp and inside lane closed for reconstruction yesterday (Oct. 13) and are expected to reopen to motorists by Friday, Oct. 23.

Crews are expected to perform pavement grinding and paving along the outside shoulder on northbound (NB) SR-55 and along inside and outside lanes of southbound (SB) SR-55 between I-405 and I-5, which will require nightly lane closures on NB and SB SR-55 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, Tuesday, Oct. 13 through Friday, Oct. 16 (into Saturday morning).

🌧️ The first rain after a long dry spell can change road conditions quickly.

When rain hits a road surface that has accumulated oil, dust and other residue, it can become slick, especially during the first part of a rainfall.

If you're driving through a construction zone, give yourself extra space, slow down, avoid sudden maneuvers and follow posted signs and lane changes.

Crews are expected to perform pavement grinding along the outside shoulder on northbound (NB) SR-55 between I-405 and I-5, which will require closing the three outside lanes on NB SR-55 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, Tuesday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Oct. 9 (into Saturday morning).
