55 Freeway Project

55 Freeway Project Caltrans and OCTA will add one regular lane and one carpool lane in each direction of SR-55.

SR-55 is one of the most heavily congested freeways in Southern California. The average daily traffic is 261,700 vehicles per day and traffic is expected to increase with future demand. SR-55 is a vital corridor connecting Orange County to Riverside and San Bernardino counties and is a major route for accessing key business centers, John Wayne Airport, major shopping destinations and beach cities.

⚠️ Construction crews have reached a major milestone on the retaining wall along northbound SR-55 near the McFadden Avenue off-ramp. Once complete, the wall will stand approximately 30 feet tall and extend 900 feet in length. Recently, crews backfilled the wall with 10,000 cubic yards of styrofoam blocks, the largest use of this material for a retaining wall in California.

Due to the wall's location, crews used the lightweight styrofoam blocks instead of traditional soil to help reduce weight and pressure for the surrounding areas. This effort required tremendous planning and coordination between construction crews, contractors, and construction management teams over the course of approximately two months.
