Gone too soon. Rest easy brother.

Gone too soon. Rest easy brother.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the West Bath Fire Department announces the loss of a longtime member and officer. For decades, Mike Drake served as a member, holding many ranks throughout his time here. He was best known for his passion for training firefighters, not only training members of the West Bath Fire Department but also members of countless area departments and nationally at FDIC. He will forever be missed, leaving a hole that will never be filled, but his legacy of service to the Town of West Bath and surrounding communities will never be forgotten.

Captain Joel Sides proudly served the Orono community from 1999 to 2026. This past Friday, friends, family, and brothers and sisters from neighboring departments gathered to celebrate his well-earned retirement.

While Captain Sides may have seemed quiet at times, the depth of knowledge he carried—and generously passed down to future generations—was truly immeasurable. His service, dedication, and passion will always be appreciated. The commitment he showed to both the community and the members of OFD was unmatched.

Local 3106 wishes you nothing but the best in this next chapter. No more missed holidays, birthdays, or important moments. It’s time for The Big Bang Theory, Pepsi, and plenty of trips to Florida with your family.

Captain Sides last piece of advice was “take care of each other, and take care of yourself.”

Congratulations on your retirement, Captain. Thank you for the lasting impact and legacy you’ve left on our department.
