Beloved and legendary singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton has passed away at age 80. Dolly was an award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, author, philanthropist, and Country Music Hall of Fame member whose decades-long career has earned her numerous Grammy Awards, CMA Awards, and other honors.

Dolly also understood and passionately believed in something libraries have always known: books can change lives. Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write and wanting to close literacy gaps and foster a lifelong love of reading for all, Dolly launched the Imagination Library in 1995. Since then, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has given away over 300 million books worldwide, including in our very own Butte County.

Thank you, Dolly, for giving so many children their first story. And thank you for believing that every child deserves a library in their own home.
