More than 11,000 people attended the 29th Space & Missile Defense Symposium last week, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Batte told the City Council on Thursday.

And city officials are using it as an example of why the tax increment financing district is needed downtown to fund the $200 million Von Braun Center expansion, where the symposium was held.

Today, the City of Oxford lost more than a fellow law enforcement officer, it lost a friend.

As a former Chief , I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside some outstanding men and women in this profession, and Retired Captain L.G. “Chip” Owen was among the best. For nearly four decades, Chip faithfully served the citizens of Oxford with honor, integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication. He never sought recognition; he simply showed up every day and did the job because he believed in serving others.

Those of us who wear the badge understand that policing is more than a career it’s a commitment to public safety. Chip lived that commitment every day. He earned the respect of his fellow officers, and his community, and the respect of everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The badge may have been retired, but the example he set never will be. His influence will continue to be seen in the officers he mentored, the lives he touched, and the community he helped make safer.

To Chip’s family, please know that you are in my prayers. His service mattered, his life made a difference, and his legacy will endure. Rest in Peace Captain.

Allowing data centers is not entirely bad but must meet certain strict infrastructure and future requirements amongst other things to be beneficial for the state and its residents. I would not want to open the flood gates allowing them to operate unregulated.

AL Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor, is pushing for more data centers in the state. He says the facilities will bring revenue to schools, law enforcement and other public services. He claims opposition to data centers is being driven by China.

Data centers are facing opposition across the country over concerns related to power consumption, water use, land use and potential costs. Some states are weighing bans on the facilities.

Tuberville made the remarks Monday at the Alabama Sheriff’s Association annual summer conference in Opelika.

“I think there are 27 states that said we aren’t going to build data centers — we’re not going to do that,” Tuberville said. “It makes too much noise. It’s going to ruin the climate — bull crap. They are listening to all this nonsense they see on social media that’s coming from China because China does not want us to grow."🔽
