Meet the People Behind the Safety Nets 🛡️

August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month! While we hope we never need them, emergency managers in Nebraska work 24/7/365 to coordinate resources, plan for risks, and ensure our communities are ready for everything from severe weather to infrastructure challenges.

They are the professionals bridging the gap between agencies, businesses, and neighbors to build a more resilient Nebraska. Take a moment this month to learn how you can support your local emergency management efforts—because when it comes to disaster, we’re all in this together.

Visit NEMA's website or your local county’s emergency management page to sign up for alerts and learn about your community’s risk.

August is Summer Sun Safety Month! ☀️🕶️

Love the outdoors? We do too! But while you’re out enjoying Nebraska’s beautiful summer days, don’t forget that UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. Protect yourself and your family with these simple steps:
• Seek Shade: Especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is strongest.
• Cover Up: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and tightly woven clothing.
• Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher 15–30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours!
• The Shadow Rule: If your shadow is shorter than you are, it's time to find shade.

Stay "Sun Wise" all month long. Learn more about how to protect your skin from the EPA: https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety

It’s County Fair season in Sarpy and Cass Counties! We know you’re ready for the rides, the animals, and—of course—the funnel cakes. While you’re making memories, keep these health tips in mind to ensure the fun doesn't stop:
• Animal Alley: Always wash your hands after petting animals and before you eat.
• Sun Safety Squad: Protect your skin from the Nebraska sun by finding shade, wearing a hat, applying sunscreen, and rocking your sunnies!
• Stay Hydrated and Cool: Drink plenty of water and take regular breaks in the shade or air-conditioned buildings.
• Stay Connected: Designate a central meeting spot if separated.

Have a blast and stay safe out there! Tag us in your favorite fair photos!

Hydration matters more than you think.

Sometimes low energy, headaches, or feeling “snacky” can be linked to not drinking enough fluids.

Watch for:
⚠️ Dry mouth
⚠️ Afternoon fatigue
⚠️ Dark yellow urine
💧 Keep a water bottle nearby for an easy reminder.

RISE Together This August! ☀️

This August, we’re celebrating National Breastfeeding Month with the theme: RISE: Resilience, Interdependence, Self-Determination, and Empowerment.

Breastfeeding is more than an individual journey; it’s a collective effort. Whether you’re a parent nursing your little one, a partner providing support, an employer creating lactation-friendly spaces, or a friend offering encouragement—every piece of the support system matters. Let’s continue to build a landscape where every family feels empowered to reach their feeding goals.

How are you "rising" and supporting families in our community this month? Let us know in the comments! 👇

🦟🕷️ Fight the Bite this summer while enjoying fun outdoor time.
Ticks and mosquitoes are active—and they can carry diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease. Protect yourself and your family by taking a few simple steps:
✔️ Use EPA-registered insect repellent
✔️ Wear long sleeves and pants in grassy or wooded areas
✔️ Check for ticks after spending time outdoors
✔️ Remove standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding

Small steps can make a big difference in preventing bites and staying healthy this season.
