There’s a reason the campfire has always been part of hunting camp.
Long after the rifles are put away and the day's hunt is over, the fire gives everyone a place to gather.

It’s where the day gets replayed, the high points, the missed opportunities, the unexpected moments, and the stories that will inevitably get a little better each time they’re told.

It’s where a younger hunter hears about the hunts that came before him. Where old traditions are explained, new ones are started, and a group of hunters who may have spent the day spread across the woods come together again around the same fire.

There’s a certain time of year when the truck gets packed, the boots get broken in, and “camp” starts meaning a tent miles from the nearest road.

For backcountry hunters, late summer and early fall mean it's time to start getting serious. Elk season is right around the corner in much of the West, and deer seasons aren't far behind.

There's a lot that goes into a hunt like this before you ever set foot in the mountains: scouting, checking your gear, dialing in your rifle or bow, planning your route, packing enough food and water, and making sure you're prepared for the weather and terrain.

But one of the most important security features is what happens after the lock engages.

This is an ode to some of our favorite hunting pals: our dogs.
Did you know a dog's sense of smell can be 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours? Depending on the breed, dogs can have hundreds of millions of scent receptors, and the part of their brain devoted to processing smells is significantly larger than ours. That incredible nose is a big part of what makes them such phenomenal hunting partners.

And they've been working alongside humans for a very long time. Dogs were among our earliest hunting partners, and over generations, different breeds were developed for different jobs: pointers locate game, spaniels flush birds, retrievers bring them back, and hounds track by scent.

Of course, the fact that they're loyal, loving, ridiculously enthusiastic, and often just plain cute doesn't hurt either.

Here's to the dogs who run the fields, splash through the marshes, sit patiently in the blind, and somehow know exactly when it's time to go hunting.

They may start the day as hunting partners, but somewhere along the way, they become family.
