Have you met our two library snails? 🐌🐌

Gary and Speedy live in an aquaponic tank in our Children’s Area! They are Mystery Snails (Pomacea bridgesii) and can grow up to 2 inches wide!

Gary and Speedy are actually siblings! They were born in our Childrens Librarian Miss Liz’s home aquarium, and came to the library in November 2024, when they were about the size of a pencil eraser ✏️ Now they are almost full grown!

🍴Gary & Speedy love eating algae & fish food
🚽They use the bathroom right in the tank water, and their waste provides nutrients to the plants that grow in the aquaponic beds above the tank!
🌱The roots of the plants help remove waste from the water - the snails and plants help each other grow!
💦Now that Gary and Speedy are so big, they make much more waste than the plant roots can clean, so Miss Liz still needs to change the tank water about once every 2 weeks.

❓Have more questions about our snails? Ask them in the comments, or visit the library!

Our book club will meet again on Saturday, August 22 at 10AM (note the new earlier start time!) to discuss Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad. Copies will be available to checkout at the adult/teen reference desk.

An imaginative alternate history tale of an escaped slave navigating a treacherous path to freedom, The Underground Railroad is a harrowing adventure story and an important mediation on American history.

Reading the book beforehand is encouraged but not required. We will also select a book to read for September at the meeting. Hope to see you there!

This is for adults only and will be on our third floor, accessible by elevator.
