🎒 Back-to-school readiness sometimes goes beyond school supplies. For youth experiencing homelessness, access to healthcare, counseling, and trusted adults can help them feel cared for, stay engaged in school, and keep working toward their goals.

Sometimes, that support looks like helping a youth get an eye exam or glasses. Sometimes, it means connecting them with someone to talk to.

When youth have the support and resources they need, they have more room to focus on school, their goals, and what comes next. That's what HYC makes possible.

🍿 Snacks. Friends. Spider-Man. 🕷️
Between school, work, housing, and figuring out what comes next, HYC youth have a lot on their plates. So sometimes, we make space for something simple: a movie, snacks, friends, and a chance to have fun. Recently, youth at the Hatcher Transitional Living Program, enjoyed a Spider-Man movie outing complete with a pre-party – a reminder that youth experiencing homelessness deserve moments to laugh, make memories, and just be kids. Sometimes, a good moment is enough.

Happy National Nonprofit Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the people and moments that make the work of HYC possible.

Recently, youth at our Hatcher Transitional Living Program, created vision boards as a way to explore their goals, express themselves creatively, and imagine what they want their futures to look like.

As staff talked with youth throughout the activity, they shared dreams of traveling the world, becoming financially independent, finding confidence, and so much more. Just as importantly, they shared ideas, encouraged one another, and created space to dream together.

We’re grateful for the staff, volunteers, donors, partners, and community members who help create those moments. You help make momentum possible. 💙

Getting to school, work, appointments, and essential resources can be a challenge when reliable transportation isn’t available. For some HYC youth, that means relying on public transportation or sharing a vehicle with family members.

This week, we’re looking for:
🚌 Donations toward transportation support
⛽ QT gas gift cards

Gas gift cards can help ease transportation costs for youth and families who rely on a vehicle, while financial donations allow HYC to purchase bus passes.

Moment Makers in Action 🤝

Sometimes, creating momentum starts with something as simple as a bake sale. 🧁🍪 The women of Gold Canyon United Methodist Church raised nearly $1,000 through a community bake sale to support youth experiencing homelessness. They then traveled more than an hour to visit HYC, learn about our programs, meet one of our recent graduates, and see firsthand how their generosity is making a difference.

Every act of kindness—big or small—can create momentum. Thank you for being Moment Makers and helping HYC youth stay focused in school and building a brighter future.

Whether it's hosting a bake sale, volunteering your time, organizing a donation drive, becoming a monthly donor, or simply sharing our mission, you can be a Moment Maker. Learn more about how to get involved at hycaz.org.

As students head back to school, many youth experiencing homelessness are balancing classes, work, and the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from.

This week, we’re looking for:
🍎 Grocery gift cards
🍔 Restaurant gift cards (McDonald’s, Chipotle, Taco Bell, and Chick-fil-A)

Gift cards provide youth with access to food so they can focus on school, work, and building their future, not where they'll find their next meal. By becoming a Moment Maker, you can help provide resources that remove barriers and help youth prepare for the school year.

Education is possible — even when housing is uncertain. The McKinney-Vento Act helps protect the educational rights of youth experiencing homelessness by removing barriers that can prevent them from staying in school.

At HYC, we help youth experiencing homelessness overcome challenges by providing support, resources, and connections that help them stay on track toward graduation and their future goals. Learn more about HYC and who we serve at hycaz.org.

What does a meal have to do with education? More than you might think.

When youth are worried about where their next meal will come from, it can be harder to focus on school, work, and plans for the future.

In our latest blog, we share how food support helps HYC youth overcome barriers and why resources like grocery and meal gift cards can help youth prepare for the school year.

Read the blog and learn how you can support HYC youth this back-to-school season.
