Yesterday, members of the Southwest Produce Cooperative gathered at AzFBN HQ to reflect, connect, and plan. And this is a crucial point to stop and talk about this work, because the SPC was created 10 years ago now! 🎉

The Hunger Heroes in this room collaborate constantly across state lines, service territories, produce donors, and sourcing agreements to share thousands of truckloads of produce equitably.

🦸They all share a bottom line: to make sure food banks can serve their communities with fresh fruits and vegetables. Plus, a lot of the food they move would otherwise go to waste!

The SPC is organized by AzFBN and includes 18 members from 7 states:

Feeding America released the annual Map the Meal Gap report this month, detailing that hunger is still on the rise nationally. In Arizona, hunger has increased by a rate of .05%.

Map the Meal Gap has been released each year since 2011 using the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Household Food Security Report. As of 2025, that report was defunded on the basis that the data was "subjective."

Which means the most recent information we have on food insecurity in the U.S. is data collected in 2024.

Needless to say, data from 2024 is...outdated, at best.

At worst, it's dangerously irrelevant.

And while it's important to know that hunger was already on the rise, it's just as important to remember: Things have changed, and not necessarily for the better.
