“When we all bring what we have to the table, what’s shared becomes greater than its parts.”

According to a national 2022 study by , those who identify as LGBTQ+ are more likely to experience food insecurity.

So, this LGBTQ+ History Month, we look back to AzFBN Development Manager Randee Gleason’s story of her time as a volunteer delivering groceries to q***r and transgender people in Phoenix back in 2021 - a time, if you’ll remember, when many of us were feeling burned out following a long season of uncertainty and isolation.

She found herself enamored by the volunteer experience and the realization that mutual aid isn’t simply charity work, but a foundation of reciprocity that forges strong communities.

“I’ve heard elders say that potlucks were born in the 1950s as a safe gathering for le****ns, as sharing food became survival. There was a need for access to food and a call for safety and community,” Randee writes.

Arizonans have been hit the hardest by changes to SNAP, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

What does this mean in day-to-day life?

Arizonans have less help as they try to keep up with the rising cost of living. Many must rely on food banks for groceries so they can keep a roof over their heads and keep the lights on.

With your support, AzFBN and statewide food banks are working every day to help as many people as possible. For example …

🍊 AzFBN collaborated with legislators to get reduced price school meals covered in the state budget so children can receive nourishing meals that fuel their growth.

🍊 We made sure families knew about SUN Bucks that helped them pay for groceries this past summer, when children couldn’t eat at school.

🍊 We worked with the Department of Economic Security, local leaders, and others to waive SNAP work requirements in Yuma County and on federally recognized tribal reservations due to the high unemployment rate.

🍊 We’re working with the state to re-enroll people for SNAP. Many who were cut are still eligible, but challenges with the system have kept them from accessing their benefits.

Arizonans are struggling like never before, and it's going to take all of us to get our state to the other side of this hunger crisis.

It's National School Lunch Week! 🍎

To kick off , AzFBN team members caught up with@osbornschools students as they enjoyed sloppy Joes crafted by featuring local beef from (an AzFBN Friends of the Farm partner).

The collaboration with K4 was blossomed by Cory Alexander, Director of Child Nutrition at Osborn School District, bringing fresh local beef for classic school lunch favorites like the sloppy Joe. Once Cory started sourcing the beef through K4, he also got the word out to other schools, which helped bring in more business for K4 AND reduced cost for the schools.

While some things may have changed since our elementary school days, there's one thing that never will - lunchtime in the cafeteria with friends is still the most beloved and crucial part of the school day for many kids.

💡Networking isn't just for conferences. Do work you're proud of, talk to everyone about it, and occasionally the universe pays you back in free car repairs.

Last week, Meg and Braden represented AzFBN at the United Food Bank conference (we ❤️ the sweatshirts, UFB!)

They nearly ran out of business cards while sharing information about AzFBN's education and training offerings for food bankers, school nutrition work, Tribal work, and farm-to-food bank work. They got lots of great feedback about our advocacy work and heard rave reviews about the produce boxes from our Rio Rico warehouse.

But inclement weather and Northern Arizona hills, in Meg's words, made the drive home feel more like the opening scene of a true crime podcast.🌩The company car was acting up.

⛅Enter: Tim Storms Service Center in Pinetop, AZ.

Meg and Braden chatted with the shop owner about food banking as the mechanic tinkered with the car. When the issue was fixed, Tim Storms Service Center wouldn't accept payment. They insisted on giving their services for free because they appreciate the work AzFBN does to end hunger for their neighbors.

🙌So if you're in Pinetop and need a repair shop, look for Tim Storms Service Center (a.k.a Storms Automotive). They're good people - trust Meg and Braden.
