Collaborating for cleaner water and healthier border communities! 💧

ADEQ Director Karen Peters met with EPA Regional Administrator Mike Martucci, USIBWC Commissioner Chad McIntosh, and local Nogales stakeholders to address water quality challenges in the Santa Cruz River.

Before the community meeting, the group toured the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Plant to view critical infrastructure work underway firsthand.

By strengthening state, federal, and local partnerships, we're pursuing lasting environmental and public health solutions across the Arizona-Sonora border region.

As we continue our 40-year timeline series, we’re looking back at a game-changing milestone for clean water in Arizona 💧

In the late 1980s, serious concerns arose in the West Valley regarding a suspected childhood cancer cluster in Maryvale. As residents demanded answers about potential environmental ties to industrial pollutants, ADEQ helped launch a comprehensive, multi-year investigation to analyze groundwater, air quality, and soil samples.

Today, the lessons learned from that time continue to shape our rigorous standards for environmental monitoring, site remediation, and community protection.

Stay tuned as we keep traveling down ADEQ’s memory lane!

One piece of trash can ruin an entire bin of recycling 🛑♻️

When non-recyclables get mixed in, they can contaminate an entire load. Instead of getting processed, whole batches end up sent straight to the landfill.

Keep these top culprits OUT of your recycling bin:
❌ Greasy pizza boxes & takeout containers
❌ Soft plastic bags & wrappers
❌ Plastic cutlery & straws
❌ Household trash or hazardous waste

Can you compost that paper? Here’s how to tell what’s safe:

✅ COMPOST IT: Plain, dull paper like newspaper, unbleached paper towels, plain cardboard, or brown paper bags.
🚫 TRASH IT: Shiny, glossy, or waxy paper. That slick finish usually means it’s coated in plastic or petroleum wax, which won't decompose properly and will contaminate your soil.

Quick test: Try tearing it! If it tears easily like a book page, you’re good. If it stretches or feels slick like a photo or receipt, straight to the bin it goes.
