The future of food justice is already here — and young people are leading the way. 💚

Black-owned farms across Oregon are helping build stronger, more equitable food systems by growing fresh food, creating community spaces and advancing food sovereignty. 🌱

As Street Roots reports, blackfuturesfarm co-founder Malcolm Hoover reflects on the tradition of community care that inspired the farm: “We all had gardens. We all fed each other.”

Today, blackfuturesfarm is helping carry that tradition forward by creating opportunities for Black people in agriculture and land stewardship while connecting community members with food and farming resources.

With 1 in 6 people and 1 in 5 children in Oregon and Southwest Washington experiencing food insecurity, and Black and Latine families facing poverty at twice the rate of white families, community-led solutions are essential to building a more equitable food system where everyone has access to nutritious, culturally relevant food.

As wildfires and smoke continue to impact communities across Southeast Oregon, farmworkers and other essential workers are facing difficult conditions while continuing to work and support our communities.

In this Public News Service story, Eddie Melendrez, community organizer in Malheur County for Oregon Food Bank, highlights the health concerns farmworkers are experiencing while working long days in the smoke and heat:

“What we're seeing is that our essential workers continue to work even when there's smoke or there's fire. But we've heard concerns from even the field workers on their physical health, their respiratory health, how it impacts them being out there in the long days in the sun, in the smoke.”

Fewer work hours in the fields shouldn't mean fewer meals on the table. Oregon Food Bank and other local organizations are on the ground supporting farmworker families facing both smoke and food insecurity.
