Pride is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community’s ongoing struggle for liberation. Rooted in resistance to police violence and oppression, Pride began as a rebellion, and we carry forward that tradition today by making it clear that we are not going anywhere.

We have fought for housing, healthcare, workplace protections, and the right to live openly as ourselves. These are struggles shared by all oppressed and working people. When we unite in solidarity, we can challenge the system that profits from division and build a new society, a socialist society, where everyone can live freely and with dignity.

More than 10,000 people attend the parade and are hungry for a Pride not dominated by corporations, but one fighting for the people! Juneteenth is a holiday that belongs to the people. It was won first by the struggle of Black people to end slavery; it was won again by the millions of working class people protesting the murder of George Floyd.

This year, we studied the radical history of Juneteenth and screenprinted Black liberation slogans to spread the lessons of this revolutionary holiday.

Juneteenth teaches us that total freedom will only come if we fight for it. On Juneteenth and every day, it is our duty to build the movement to win Black liberation and socialism!

Across North America, FIFA and its corporate partners are raking in billions by charging an average of $1000 to see a game. Here in Rhode Island, politicians and business leaders have touted the World Cup as a massive boost to our state’s economy. And yet workers at T.F. Green Airport, who are the first to welcome the very visitors driving this growth, are barely making minimum wage. Meanwhile, their employer, Grove Bay Concessions, charges travelers $27 for a burger!

That’s why workers at T.F. Green are standing up, ready to strike as soon as this coming Monday, June 22.

On Monday morning, ICE kidnapped a community member after pulling him out of his van in the middle of the highway, recklessly blocking several lanes of traffic in the process and almost causing a 3 lane car crash. The man taken had a pending charge in court. Similarly, a community member kidnapped by ICE from Atlantic Mills last Saturday also had an upcoming court date.

This is part of a disturbing pattern of recent ICE kidnappings in Providence that target community members who end up in the police and court data systems after being stopped by the Providence Police – often due to racial profiling – with minor violations like driving without a license.

This is also part of a nationwide phenomenon. Local police and court data is continuously shared with federal police agencies like ICE through DHS Fusion Centers. Police data is thus used to aid and abet ICE attacks in a flagrant denial of due process—regardless of city policy that prohibits ICE-police collaboration.

Governor McKee is slated to sign a new law making it illegal for Rhode Islanders to be arrested by ICE on their way to or from court. But even if this law is successfully enforced, it does nothing to prevent ICE from targeting community members with future court dates, whose data may already have been leaked to ICE.

We cannot simply legislate out certain ICE kidnappings. We demand an end to racist policing and an end to deportations as the only way to ensure the safety of all our community members!

Juneteenth is more than another day off work.

The official narrative often erases the radical history that Juneteenth teaches us. Slavery didn’t end because of Abe Lincoln, but because of the struggle and sacrifice of enslaved Black people and the abolitionist movement! So this year, we’re celebrating Juneteenth by creating art together that can bring this radical lesson into all of our weekend celebrations and beyond.

Together, we will be reading firsthand accounts of enslaved Africans, discussing what this history means for our movements today and screenprinting lessons from abolitionist history that we can bring with us everywhere we go. On Juneteenth we recommit to the fight for Black liberation within our lifetime!

Join us to march in the RI illuminated pride parade, in the contingent fighting for socialism and LGBTQ liberation!

Every year, Pride is a reaffirmation that the LGBTQ struggle is ongoing. Trump and the billionaires are destroying our world while demonizing q***r and trans people, attacking trans youth and banning gender affirming care. But they aren’t the root of the problem — they’re symptoms of a system that profits off our oppression and wants us divided.

This Pride, we march to show that the fight for LGBTQ liberation is inseparable from the fight against capitalism. We are fighting for a system where q***r and trans people can live with joy, dignity, and full access to civil rights. That system is socialism!
