This September, in recognition of National Recovery Month, we're highlighting organizations across Nevada that support people and families affected by substance use and recovery. First up: Shine a Light Foundation in Southern Nevada.

Shine A Light reaches people experiencing homelessness and substance use disorder in the places most services never go, including the flood channels, tunnels, and encampments around Las Vegas. Their goal isn't short-term help, but a path from the street into treatment, recovery, housing, and long-term stability.

Through their IPATH program (Instant Placement with Access to Treatment and Housing), the team removes barriers and connects people directly to the right level of care, then keeps walking alongside them through recovery, housing, and greater independence.

Did you know homicide is the second leading cause of death for Indigenous men ages 10–24, and Indigenous women are murdered at rates up to 10 times higher than the national average?

The crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) affects families and communities across Nevada and beyond. This October, our friends at United Natives will host their 3rd Annual MMIR Summit, Uniting for Justice, Healing & Action.

The two-day summit will bring together tribal leaders, advocates, service providers, and community members for panels, breakout sessions, and conversations focused on justice, healing, and action.

The Nevada Homeless Alliance, in partnership with Helms Helps Foundation, is hosting the 5th Annual Nevada Statewide Conference on Addressing Homelessness October 1–2 at Las Vegas City Hall.

This year’s theme, “Flipping the Script: What Happens Here Changes Here,” will bring together service providers, advocates, people with lived experience, community members, and other partners from across Nevada to discuss homelessness and community-based responses.

Connections between housing, behavioral health, substance use, and other systems are an important part of Nevada’s broader response to community needs.
