FMO Investigating fire in St. Albans

The St. Albans Fire Department requested assistance from the Office of State Fire Marshal in determining the origin and cause of a residential structure fire at 71 Denbow Road in St. Albans on August 26, 2026. Fire personnel reported that the residence was heavily involved in fire when they arrived at the scene shortly before 3:00pm. The home was vacant at the time of the fire; however, investigators learned that lawn care work had been conducted at the property the day before the fire was discovered. State Fire Marshal Investigators responded to the scene and conducted an examination of the property. Investigators determined that the fire originated on a rear deck area of the residence. The specific cause of the fire remains under investigation. At this time, the fire has been classified as Undetermined. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

St. Albans Crews Battle 2+ Alarm Structure Fire

At approximately 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, the St. Albans Fire Department, along with first-alarm mutual aid partners from the Hartland and Corinna Fire Departments, was dispatched to 71 Denbow Road for a reported occupied, fully involved structure fire.

Crews arrived less than seven minutes after dispatch and found a one-and-a-half-story home with fire on both floors. Firefighters conducted searches for trapped occupants and found none. They then initiated an interior attack but were challenged by the building’s layout and its former use as a ma*****na cultivation site, with living spaces located on the second floor.

Crews battled the fire for several hours. A second alarm brought additional mutual aid from the Canaan, Detroit, Skowhegan, Dexter, and Newport fire departments, with further assistance from the Dover-Foxcroft and Plymouth fire departments.

High heat and humidity, along with limited volunteer staffing during the workday, added to the challenges. Despite those conditions, St. Albans firefighters and mutual aid partners assembled the personnel and resources needed to battle the fire.

Sebasticook Valley Ambulance provided standby EMS coverage at the scene, while the Pittsfield Fire Department provided station coverage for St. Albans.

An estimated 100,000 gallons of water were shuttled to the scene and used during firefighting operations. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to investigate the fire’s origin and cause.

The incident also marked the first use of the St. Albans Fire Department’s updated personnel accountability system. Assistant Chief Ian Tenny of the Scarborough Fire Department developed and taught the system to department members. It proved invaluable during the incident, enhancing safety and accountability for all personnel operating at the scene.

This morning, Engine 3 and Tanker 2 were dispatched to Pittsfield to assist with a working structure fire. Our crews responded as part of the mutual aid system to provide additional personnel and apparatus to support operations on scene.

Last night, Firefighters spent the evening training on water rescue operations.

Firefighters worked through hands-on scenarios focused on safe approaches, rescue techniques, equipment use, and the challenges that come with operating around the water. Training like this helps our firefighters build the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively when someone is in trouble.

Water rescues can change rapidly and present significant hazards to both the victim and rescuers. Regular training allows our members to practice these skills before they are needed on an actual emergency.

This spring, four members of the St. Albans Fire Department successfully completed the Maine State Basic Fire School. This course, which includes nearly 100 hours of training and was hosted locally and delivered entirely by our own in-house instructors, all of whom are St. Albans firefighters.

This accomplishment reflects a high level of commitment, discipline, and professionalism from those involved, as well as the department’s continued investment in developing well-trained personnel. A fifth member is also nearing completion of the program. It is also important to recognize that there are always members working behind the scenes on classes and training opportunities to continuously improve the department.

Completion of this training qualifies members to operate with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a critical capability in modern firefighting. Having SCBA-certified personnel ensures that our department can safely and effectively operate in Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments, including interior structure fires. This directly enhances our ability to protect lives and property while reducing risk to our firefighters.

This training also supports compliance with Maine Bureau of Labor Standards (BLS) requirements, ensuring our department meets established safety and operational standards.

By hosting this program in-house, the class was completed at little to no cost to the town, providing significant value while strengthening our response capabilities, improving safety, and enhancing overall emergency preparedness.

We commend all participants and instructors for their dedication to serving the community.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

St. Albans Fire, alongside SVH Ambulance, is currently operating at a serious motor vehicle accident on Hartland Road (Route 152) in the area of Snow Road involving downed power lines.

The roadway is shut down at this time. Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

*Extreme Heat Expected This Week*

The National Weather Service is forecasting dangerously hot and humid conditions across Maine this week. In St Albans, afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values over 100°F possible.

Please take precautions to stay safe:

* Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
* Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
* Wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
* Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, and fainting. If symptoms become severe or someone becomes confused or loses consciousness, call 911 immediately.

Please check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe.

St. Albans Fire & Rescue invites you to join us for a great day at Summerfest on Saturday, July 18th.

Start your morning with our Summerfest Breakfast from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM at the St. Albans Fire Station, 8 Water Street. Breakfast is by donation and a great way to support your local fire department before heading out to enjoy the day.

We are also hosting a Free Youth Fishing Derby from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Big and Little Indian Lakes for participants 15 years old and younger. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place largemouth bass, as well as for the participant who catches the most yellow perch. All participants will be entered to win a one-day fishing trip donated by Holbrook Guide Service in Greenville. Free ice cream will be provided for all participants.

Weigh-in will take place at 12 Corinna Road in St. Albans. No pre-registration is required.

We hope to see you there for a full day of food, fun, and community support.
