What do “A Study in Scarlet”, Salt Lake Theatre programs, mining publications, sheet music, travel brochures, sporting goods catalogs, and some very opinionated writing about Utah history have in common?

They’re all tucked inside the City Library’s Mormon-Utah Pamphlets Sammelbände,121 volumes of separately published materials collected and bound together by H.O. Shepard, the Library’s “Magazine Man,” more than a century ago.

The Library purchased the collection from Shepard in 1920 for $580 (roughly $10,000 today)and it still contains so many one-of-a-kind treasures. In this episode of Chats with Cherie, we’re taking a peek inside this fascinating time capsule of Utah history.

From 2025 to 2026, ULC partnered with Everyday Democracy to train 50 library staff across 12 libraries in the United States and Canada on the techniques of multipartial facilitation—a form of facilitation that encourages and actively supports diverse participants and perspectives. Over this time, participant libraries facilitated 32 programs reaching a total of 674 attendees.

Topics included youth workforce development, urban renewal, food justice, gender, race, housing, AI, education, civil liberties, and more. Along the way, we learned a lot about the value and impact of these conversations and how libraries can continue to be bridges.
