This week is Bat Appreciation Week! 🦇 😍 We do not rehab them, but we all love bats. They are on the frontlines of insect control and pollination! (Never, ever touch a bat without gloves on!)

TW: cruelty to animals

A San Francisco resident decided to put some glue traps outside. And here is the result: a beautiful rat and a beautiful barn owl were the victims. They had been suffering on the glue board for some time. Luckily a neighbor called SF Animal Care & Control and the animals were taken to PHS for treatment. Hopefully they will recover.

Glue traps are the most inhumane, cruel methods of "pest management" imaginable. They're marketed as safe and non-toxic... conveniently ignoring the brutal reality that the animals stuck to the glue trap don't actually die and can spend days screaming and suffering from dehydration and shock. They sometimes rip off limbs in an attempt to escape. It does not matter whether it's a "target" animal or a "non-target" animal, because the suffering is the same!!!

It's shocking that the city of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, still supports glue traps - while cities all across California and countries around the world have already banned them. Last year, SF Animal Advisory Council sent a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors in support of a ban, but perhaps it ended up in the circular file? If you are local to San Francisco, we urge you to write to your Supervisor and tell them to act on the recommendation!

An incredible rescue earlier this week... 🦝 A member of the general public named Bonni contacted us about a baby raccoon - an iconic blonde (leucistic) Oakland raccoon at that - crying and possibly stuck in a palm tree 🌴 in The Gardens at Lake Merritt

It just so happened that Rhita, our advocacy and hotline team co-lead, was at the Gardens returning traps borrowed for another raccoon rescue. Rhita was able to meet with Bonni and with the full cooperation of the Gardens' managers and Oakland Fire Department they were able to get a ladder and save this tiny little baby boy raccoon!!!

It truly takes a village and we are so grateful to everyone who took part in this rescue. 🙏 Thank you so much!!! Although the baby has a fairly serious injury, we are hoping he will make a full recovery under the expert care of our raccoon team and amazing vet.
