San José Environmental Services runs Regional Wastewater Facility, garbage/recycling, drinking water, watershed protection, and other programs.

The San José Environmental Services Department leads Climate Smart San José; manages garbage and recycling services; watershed protection and pollution prevention; municipal drinking water and recycled water; sustainability initiatives; and the operation and infrastructure improvements of the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. ESD’s mission is to deliver world-class utility services and programs to improve our health, environment and economy.

FREE compost, mulch, and gardening giveaways!
Join us this Saturday, August 1, at Veggielution 's First Saturday event at Emma Prusch Farm Park (8:30 a.m.–1 p.m.).

Arrive early for the opening of our new self-serve Compost Hub with FREE compost and mulch (9 a.m.–Noon, while supplies last), pick up native seed packs and other giveaways at the ESD Gardening Resource Fair (10 a.m.–1 p.m.), and hear special remarks at 10:45 a.m. from Mayor Mahan, Councilmember Ortiz, and ESD Deputy Director Judy Erlandson.

Special thanks to Voyager Craft Coffee for donating large, reusable coffee sacks for San José residents to use for compost collection. Available for free while supplies last!

Hey residents, one battery can start a fire. When lithium batteries (i.e., power tool battery, power bank, rechargeable battery, vacuum battery, cell phone battery, laptop battery, and high-capacity battery) are tossed in garbage or recycling containers, they can spark dangerous fires that put collection crews and our community at risk. Protect the people who keep our city running. Dispose lithium batteries by making a FREE drop-off appointment at HHW.org.

Residents interested in the self-serve compost/mulch should enter through 1044 Knox Ave, San José, CA 95122. Be sure to also attend our Gardening Resource Fair at 10 am to learn more about local food security initiatives, gardening resources, and water efficiency programs! To attend the Gardening Resource Fair happening at Veggielution’s Pavilion, please utilize the free parking located at 647 S. King Rd, San José, CA 95116.
