An Event-Filled First Week of August for Schuyler Hose

Schuyler Hose Co. members are off to an eventful start to August following a busy month of July. From community events and training to emergency responses, our volunteers have been busy serving the community throughout the first week of the month.

Sunday, August 3 – Fourteen members participated in Schuylerville's annual Turning Point Parade. Later that evening, members responded to a commercial fire alarm activation in the Village.

Wednesday, August 5 – While members were conducting operator training on our new-to-us ETA-572, Schuyler Hose was dispatched to a residential fire on County Route 113 in the Town of Greenwich. Upon arrival, Car 57 reported smoke showing with a fire located underneath a mobile home. Quick action by the homeowner, combined with the rapid response of first-due ER-573, contained the fire and limited the damage to the structure.

Thursday, August 6 – Members gathered for our monthly company meeting, where we also celebrated 190 years of organized fire protection in the Village of Schuylerville and our surrounding community.

Friday, August 7 – Members provided fire extinguisher training to staff members at Schuylerville Central Schools, helping school personnel prepare to respond safely should a small fire occur.

Saturday morning, August 8 – MR-576, our rescue boat, was launched from the Village boat launch to provide water rescue standby for the 20th Annual Cardboard Boat Race hosted by Hudson Crossing Park.

Saturday evening, August 8 – ER-571 and F-575 provided standby coverage for the fireworks held as part of the Turning Point Festival. After returning to service from the fireworks, Schuyler Hose was alerted for an unknown fire on Grangehall Rd. in the Town of Northumberland. Upon arrival, firefighters found an attended controlled burn. No action was required, and the company returned to service.

From emergency calls and operator training to community events and public safety education, Schuyler Hose's volunteers continue to stay active and ready to serve.

*** Turning Point Parade Traffic and Parking Advisory ***

The Turning Point Parade is tomorrow. Please note the following Traffic and Parking advisories:

We will begin shutdown of the parade route at 12:45pm on Sunday, August 02, and will remain closed until the Parade ends at approximately 3pm.

Spring St. will be closed from Green St. to Broad St.
Broad St. will be closed from Spring St. to the Schuyler House.

All Village roads/Alleys leading to the parade route will be coned/barricaded. There will be no entering the parade route after 12:45.

There will also be no parking on the Broad Street portion of the Parade Route after 11am. No parking is allowed on Spring St. anytime.

Pearl St. between Saratoga St. and Spring Street will be closed at 10am for parade line up. There will be no parking allowed on that portion of Pearl st. during that time as well.

Schuyler Hose Co would like to convey our most sincere condolences to our brothers and sisters of GFD on the loss of one of their own. RIP "Grampy" we'll take it from here.

It is with heavy hearts that the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Lifetime member George “Grampy” Culbertson, a devoted and loved member of the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department for 54 years.

George joined the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department in January of 1967 and dedicated more than five decades of service to protecting the Greenwich and surrounding communities.

Throughout his remarkable time with the department , Grampy served as 2nd Assistant Chief, Captain, Vice President, was an honored Lifetime Member and mentor to many young firefighters near and far. He received numerous recognitions, including Firefighter of the Year, the Medal of Merit, the Chief's Award, and the Distinguished Service Award.

Firefighting was truly a family tradition for George. His sons and grandsons proudly followed in his footsteps as members of the department. continuing the legacy of service he inspired.

George was more than a firefighter—he was a mentor, a friend, and "Grampy" to so many in and out of the department. His kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact on his family, the Greenwich community, this department, and the entire firefighting community.

We extend our deepest condolences to his loving wife of 62 years Luava, the entire Culbertson family and all who had the privilege of coming across and being impacted by the man we call Grampy.

His legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will never be forgotten.

Funeral services for George will be shared when available.

🚒 Event-Filled Weekend for Schuyler Hose Co. 🚒

It was a busy weekend for the volunteers of Schuyler Hose Co., as members traveled to Pennsylvania to bring home our new-to-us Engine-Tanker, responded to four emergency calls, and provided water rescue support for a community event.

On Friday, Assistant Chief Rob Decker, Lieutenant Ray Carr, and Firefighters Dan Buell and Bradley Decker traveled to Lewistown, Pennsylvania, to take delivery of our newest apparatus from Heritage Fire Company. After meeting with members of Heritage Fire Company for dinner Friday evening, the crew stayed overnight before making the trip back to Schuylerville on Saturday with the apparatus.

While the pickup crew was away, members at home remained busy, responding to four emergency incidents:
• A motor vehicle accident in Bacon Hill on Friday evening.
• Assisting the Washington County Highway Department with a large tree blocking County Route 113 early Saturday morning.
• A commercial fire alarm activation at Hollingsworth & Vose later Saturday morning.
• A motor vehicle accident in the Town of Saratoga early Sunday morning that required firefighters to extricate an uninjured driver from the vehicle.

On Sunday, Firefighters Pete Derway, Travis Holcomb, and Bradley Decker provided water rescue standby for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Fishing Clinic. The crew staged with our rescue boat on the Champlain Canal just north of Lock 5, ensuring a rapid response capability throughout the event.

Weekends like this highlight the dedication of our volunteers, who remain ready to serve our community and our neighboring agencies at a moment's notice.

During the month of June 2026, Schuyler Hose firefighters responded to 18 emergency incidents, providing 25.5 hours of service to our community.

Some highlights from the month include:

The members of Schuyler Hose Co. are proud to recognize Captain Mark Wells for 30 years of active service to our department and the community.

Throughout his years of service, Mark has been a dedicated leader both on and off the fireground. As Captain, he has played an important role in training and mentoring our members while helping ensure the department is always ready to respond.

In addition to his firematic leadership, Mark serves on our Membership Committee, helping recruit and retain the next generation of volunteer firefighters. Behind the scenes, he has also devoted countless hours to the maintenance and upkeep of our fire station and has been instrumental in keeping MR-576 operational and ready for service.

Thank you, Mark, for your 30 years of dedication, leadership, and commitment to Schuyler Hose Co. and the citizens we proudly serve. Congratulations on this well-deserved milestone!

With heat reaching Florida like temps here are some suggestions on what to do in these extremes.

EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT, SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE STORMS TODAY & COOLING CENTERS ARE AVAILABLE

An EXTREME HEAT WARNING has been issued and remains in effect from this morning through Friday for Washington County. Additional heat advisories will likely be needed on Saturday for some lower elevation areas. Additionally, there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms for most of the area today (main threat will again be damaging winds, but isolated instances of large hail will remain possible).

HEAT RISK IMPACTS
NWS Heat Risk impacts reach the Major Category (level 3 of 4) for most of the region today, Extreme Category (level 4 of 4) on Thursday and Friday due to the cumulative effects of extreme heat with little relief overnight and back to Major (level 3 of 4) again for Saturday. Over the course of the last month, members of Schuyler Hose Co. along with members from David Nevins Fire Co. have been conducting Pump Operator training. This training provides firefighters with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely and effectively operate fire apparatus pumps during emergency incidents.

Training topics included pump operations, water supply, hydrant operations, drafting, hose line management, pressure calculations, troubleshooting, and apparatus safety. Members gained practical experience establishing water supply systems and delivering adequate fire flow for fire suppression operations.

This in-house training was led by Captain Matt Derway and Instructor Francis Murphy.

Training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to provide reliable water supply operations while protecting both firefighters and the communities we serve.
