Over the course of the last month, members of Schuyler Hose Co. along with members from David Nevins Fire Co. have been conducting Pump Operator training. This training provides firefighters with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely and effectively operate fire apparatus pumps during emergency incidents.

Training topics included pump operations, water supply, hydrant operations, drafting, hose line management, pressure calculations, troubleshooting, and apparatus safety. Members gained practical experience establishing water supply systems and delivering adequate fire flow for fire suppression operations.

This in-house training was led by Captain Matt Derway and Instructor Francis Murphy.

Training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to provide reliable water supply operations while protecting both firefighters and the communities we serve.

Schuyler Hose Co. is a 100% volunteer organization, and we are always looking for new members. If you’re interested in serving your community, please contact us here on Facebook or stop by the station on a Thursday evening to learn more.

May 4 was chosen as the date to celebate International Firefighter' Day as it is also the Feast Day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

A Roman officer known for his courage and leadership, St Florian is remembered for his role in organising firefighting brigades and for standing firm in the face of danger.

His legacy lives on in firefighters around the world today.

On this day, we honour not only tradition—but the enduring spirit of service and protection. We celebrate and thank brave firefighters around the world who risk their lives to protect our communities. Your courage, commitment, and dedication never go unnoticed. Stay safe, and know that you are deeply appreciated.

Congratulations to Probationary Firefighters Bradley Decker and Lucas Derway on completing the New York State Firefighter I Blended Learning Course, hosted by the Wilton Fire Department.

Over the past two months, both members successfully completed 129 hours of training. This comprehensive program prepares firefighters to operate as both exterior and interior structural firefighters under the supervision of a company officer. The course includes a combination of online learning and in-person skills sessions, covering areas such as PPE, SCBA, fire behavior, ladders, hose operations, ventilation, search and rescue, vehicle fires, and hazardous materials.

Great work by both members on this significant accomplishment and commitment to the fire service.

This past Saturday evening, members of Schuyler Hose, along with family and friends, gathered for our annual company banquet and awards ceremony at the Middle Falls firehouse.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of two members for achieving 50 years of active service. Michael Barron, who joined in November 1975, and Edward Carr, who joined in April 1976, were both honored for their incredible dedication. Sadly, we lost Mikey to pancreatic cancer just a few weeks ago, making this recognition especially meaningful. Both Mike and Ed received awards from the company, the Village of Schuylerville, and the New York State Assembly.

Firematic officers were sworn into office by Village Mayor Dan Carpenter.

The Firefighter of the Year Award was presented to Captain Mark Wells in recognition of his hard work and dedication, as voted on by the membership.

The Town of Saratoga Award was presented by Town Supervisor Ian Murray to our Company President, Laurie Scheuing.

Meritorious Service Awards were presented to Assistant Chief Rob Decker, Secretary Frank Merrill and Trustee James Carr.

In addition, several members were recognized for contributing significant hours in service to the company.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past year—especially our families. We look forward to continuing to serve and protect our community in the year ahead.

Yesterday, Schuyler Hose provided F.A.S.T. support for a full day of live fire evolutions as part of the New York State Firefighter I course at the Wilton Fire Station.

F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) is a dedicated crew assigned to stand by during fire operations, ready to immediately deploy in the event a firefighter becomes lost, trapped, or injured. Their primary role is to locate, assist, and remove firefighters from hazardous situations as quickly and safely as possible.

We are proud to have two of our probationary firefighters currently enrolled in the course as they continue building the skills necessary to serve our community.

50 YEARS OF ACTIVE SERVICE
April 6, 2026

The membership of Schuyler Hose would like to congratulate our Vice President, Edward J. Carr, on 50 years of active service.

Schuylerville Firefighters Remain Busy

On April 3, 2026, at 5:06 PM, Schuylerville firefighters were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire on County Route 338 in the Town of Saratoga.

ER-573 arrived at 5:14 PM and, following a quick investigation, determined the incident to be a chimney fire. Crews worked to extinguish the smoldering fire and safely remove contents from the wood pellet stove.

Additional responding units included TA-574, Tower 577, and Car 57. Firefighters remained on scene for just over an hour, with the department returning to full service at 6:49 PM.

This marked the fifth fire our firefighters have responded to this week.
