Health rumors are everywhere we turn these days. Online, on TV, and even when we talk to our friends and neighbors. It can be incredibly difficult to know where to turn for reliable information.

This month marks National Immunization Awareness Month, a great time to find new, reliable sources of health information. But what do you look for? First and foremost, remember to trust your instincts. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Second, consider what the source of the information wants from you. Are they asking you to buy a product? Or are they presenting information and encouraging you to talk to your own doctor about it? Third, find experts in your own life who you can turn to for advice. Perhaps you know a nurse or pharmacist who can answer your questions.

We encourage you to use this month to learn more about vaccines, their safety, and their effectiveness.

As children begin heading back to school, it’s a good time to remind ourselves of the many ways we can keep them safer. Flashing yellow lights on a school bus do not mean speed up and get around. It means slow down and prepare to stop. Crossing guards are not inconveniencing your morning commute. They are protecting our children.

The start of the school year also means the start of virus season. Remember to send your children’s teachers extra boxes of tissues, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes! And there’s another way to keep children safe – getting them vaccinated.

Peek-a-boo is cute. Whooping cough? Hard pass. Pertussis can be especially scary for babies, so ask about DTaP and Tdap vaccines to help protect your crew.

Vaccination rates have fallen across the country and in our own community. Children are particularly vulnerable in their classrooms. Did you know that one in five people has a condition that makes them more vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases? By ensuring children who can be vaccinated are protected, they can prevent illnesses from reaching their classmates. Let’s all do our part to keep kids healthier and safer this school year.

August is a time to drink up the last drops of summer and prepare for Fall. Mix up that last batch of lemonade and prepare for the pumpkin spice lattes! We have one more way to celebrate August: National Immunization Awareness Month.

I know we’re all tired of talking about vaccines. Have you ever even gotten the flu? Maybe you’ve had COVID, but it wasn’t really that bad. I get it, but hear me out.

Viruses and bacteria don’t care if you’re tired of them. They’re not tired of you. Tens of thousands of adults are hospitalized every year because of the flu and pneumococcal disease. You can get Hepatitis A and B at any time throughout the year. Ever talk to someone who’s had shingles? It’s not fun.

Taking a moment to visit your provider or pharmacist can protect you and those around you from these diseases.
