Solvay Fire Department

Solvay Fire Department We protect about 15,000 residents, in 7.7 square miles of land, and roughly 3 miles of Onondaga Lake shoreline.

Organized in 1895 the Solvay Fire Department is an ISO Class 2 department providing fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to Solvay, Geddes, and surrounding communities. Formed in 1895, our department is located immediately west of the City of Syracuse, covering the Syracuse Suburbs of Solvay, Westvale, and the Town of Geddes in Onondaga County, New York. Our district is densely populated,

with a mix of residential, commercial, and heavy industry. The New York State Fairgrounds are located entirely in the Solvay Fire District. Solvay responds to over 1,400 calls for service annually, making Solvay the 3rd busiest fire department in Onondaga County in 2011. Solvay is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers. Solvay has an active Student Bunk-In program and Explorer Post for our future firefighters. Until 2005, Solvay operated out of 3 year round Fire Stations, when Stations 1 and 3 were closed to combine and form the new Station 1. Solvay Station 1 in located in the industrial section of the district, and Station 2 located in a traditional Solvay neighborhood. Station 4, never changed designations after the merger of Stations 1 and 3, is located at the New York State Fairgrounds, and is staffed 24 hours a day with 6 personnel and Engine 21 during the 12 days of the Fair. Solvay has a long, proven relationship with many other public services. The Town of Geddes, Village of Solvay, Onondaga County, Town of Geddes Police Department, Village of Solvay Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Rural/Metro Medical Services of Central New York, and Onondaga County 911 are close partners in our business, and contribute to the goal of providing the best possible service to our community.

Last night at 2145 an employee at a local facility called to report a large fire in the plant. Engine 11 arrived at 2148 locating fires throughout a very large cardboard drying unit and the ventilation system, which spread the fire throughout 3 floors. The unit’s sprinkler system activated, however it was unable to contain the blaze. It took roughly 45 minutes to extinguish the fires. Solvay firefighters operated for another 90 minutes exposing hidden smoldering fires. 50 firefighters responded from Solvay, Taunton, Fairmount, Liverpool, and Lakeside. Property damage was limited to the drying unit and ventilation system, no civilians were injured, 1 firefighter was transported to Upstate by AMR for a minor head injury, he has since been released. We would also like to thank the employees for their quick action and assistance during the fire.

A staple of our Organization. We are deeply saddened by the death of Barb. Barb spent many years as our Administrative Assistant. Always smiling, organized as one could be, a second mother to us all! Please take a moment to think of the Pienkowski family as they grieve this tremendous loss.

In light of the inclement weather conditions, we kindly request that residents clear the snow from the fire hydrant closest to their premises. Our emergency responders carry shovels, but digging out a covered hydrant can lead to delays and increased fire damage. We are grateful for the community's cooperation and support during this time.

Yesterday evening while Engine 21 was covering North West for their parade, Engine 11 and the Truck responded to a chimney fire in Westvale. Our companies worked to quickly extinguish the fire and thoroughly check for extension into the structure. Thankfully, the fire was contained to the chimney. No firefighters or civilians were injured.
