The bailiff was told to watch one seat in the courtroom. Not the defendant’s. Not the witness stand.

An empty chair in the back row.

Nobody sat there the entire trial. Court staff assumed it was reserved for security reasons and never questioned it.

On the final day, right before the verdict was read, someone finally sat down in it. An older woman, dressed in black, who hadn’t been seen at any other point during the trial.

The judge paused. Looked at her. Then looked at the defendant, whose expression changed the second he saw her face.

The verdict was read two minutes later. Nobody ever learned who she was.

He asked to see the evidence one more time before the verdict was read.

That’s not normal. By that point in a trial, the evidence has already been shown, argued over, and sealed. Nobody asks to see it again, especially not the defendant.

The judge allowed it anyway. Called for a short recess.

He sat alone at the defense table with a single photograph in front of him for almost four minutes. Just looking at it. His lawyer said nothing. The prosecutor said nothing.

When the recess ended, he didn’t say a word about what he saw. He just nodded once and asked for the trial to continue.

The jury came back forty minutes later.
