Our 2026 Summer Reading Program, Unearth a Story, brought thousands of readers through our doors and into the community for a summer of books, programs and fun.

Nearly 6,000 kids and teens completed the in-house program, an 11% increase from 2025, while 4,638 kids, teens and families attended special events. Through Summer Reading to Go, we reached more than 9,000 kids and gave away 15,474 books. Adults got in on the fun, too, with 1,183 program completions.

Thanks to everyone who read, participated and helped make our Summer Reading Program a success!

Lincoln High School was more than just a school to Springfield’s Black community during the era of legally enforced segregation. It also served as a library and a community center. The Lincoln High School that operated until 1955 was actually the second building to bear that name. The first Lincoln High School opened in 1884.
