🎳🍕🥗 A day of team bonding, big ideas, and a whole lot of fun!

Have you ever wondered what the ES staff is up to after graduation, well wonder no more! 🤩

Our staff retreat was the perfect reminder that some of the best teamwork happens when we step away from the usual routine and spend time together. ❤️

We started the day with a little friendly competition at the bowling alley 🎳. There were strikes, near-misses, plenty of laughs, and maybe a little competitive spirit! 😄 Whether we were knocking down pins or cheering each other on, it was a great way to relax and connect as a team.

We had 2 bowling teams:

TEAM SHROOMS 🍄 = Kabir (hence the team's name LOL), LaShanette, E'jaaz, Dena and Tara

TEAM EARTH 🌎 = Suki, Tom, Diana, Melissa, and Richard

Then it was time to refuel! 🍕🥗 We enjoyed a delicious meal of pizza and salad while catching up, sharing stories, and enjoying some good conversation around the table.

Of course, our retreat wasn’t all fun and games—we also made time to focus on the future. 💡 We held our strategic planning meeting and had some fantastic conversations about where we’re headed, what we want to accomplish, and how we can continue growing together.

And the best part? Some really great ideas came out of the conversation! 🙌✨ It was exciting to see everyone sharing their thoughts, building on each other’s ideas, and thinking creatively about what’s possible.

We left the day feeling energized, inspired, and even more connected as a team. 💪❤️

Here’s to good times, great teamwork, big ideas, and an exciting road ahead! 🚀

Do you want to build and apply your data science skills? Are you interested in figuring out how we can do better at addressing climate change and other environmental problems?

If so, consider taking “Environmental Economics: Models, Data, and Policy Design” (Econ 177 / GEP 130 / GEP 230) this fall!

We use data and mathematical models to measure the harms from pollution and evaluate environmental policies, considering both overall net benefits and social equity/environmental justice. You’ll learn and practice data science skills that are broadly useful for data science jobs, your senior thesis, and grad school.

We also all get to know each other and have a lot of fun.

Do you want to learn tangible skills for working with local community members experiencing homelessness? How about ways to uplift harm reduction efforts?

If so, join us for a 2-unit Cardinal Service Learning Course! Fall Quarter service-learning elective, "MED 219: Intro to Housing Equity, Homeless Health, Harm Reduction, and Community-Led Case Management" led by the Stanford Housing Equity Project ( https://housingequity.stanford.edu/ )!

All students are welcome to enroll.

When? Classes will be held on Wednesdays 9:30-11:20am

Where? LKSC with opportunities for off-campus sessions with our community partner The United Effort Organization on Wednesday and Saturday mornings per your availability. Carpooling for off campus sessions will be available!

Who is this class good for? Anyone who wants a better understanding of the housing crisis and how to support people experiencing homelessness. This includes graduate and undergraduate students. We will include clinical tie-ins for medical and PA students that will enable you to better support your future patients.

Tackle catastrophic wildfire through the Stanford Big Earth Hackathon: Wildland Fire Challenge ( https://www.stanfordbigearthhackathon.com/ ), a 9-week challenge (and optional companion course CEE165H/265H) where Stanford teams solve real wildfire problems submitted by CAL FIRE, US Wildland Fire Service, PG&E, and others, spanning early detection & suppression, community risk reduction, ecosystem resilience, and ignition reduction. You'll be mentored by wildfire practitioners, supported by technical workshops, and present at a final expo, where top teams can win up to $50k in funding and incubation through the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator ( https://sustainability-accelerator.stanford.edu/ ).

Our world is changing rapidly, and how to respond and adapt to these changes is a key question for the scientific community. Science is a way to not only study the world, but to actively take part in shaping the future. Timely reflection on scientific practices and revising default modes of working is needed to overcome historical biases and lead to more effective science practices and robust scientific outcomes.

We welcome students from diverse disciplines including STEM and the Environmental Humanities to discuss questions including: “What are acts of science? What are our moral responsibilities as scientists and engineers? How can the practice of science change to meet sustainability and stewardship needs of the present and future?” Through community building and discussion, dialogue with invited speakers, hands-on activities, and a field trip to Jasper Ridge ‘Ootchamin ’Ooyakama, we
will reimagine a sustainable, ethical future for biosciences and consider how to put those dreams into practice now.
