🌎 Earth Systems Program 🌎

Please join us next Friday, October 23, at 1 p.m. in Y2E2 299 for “The Fate of Earth,” a talk by Dr. Josh Fisher.

Dr. Fisher uses satellite observations to explore how Earth’s ecosystems respond to a changing climate. His work spans more than a decade at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he helped establish the ECOSTRESS mission to study plant water use and stress from space. He now brings that expertise to research and teaching at Chapman University and satellite science at Hydrosat.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Join a community of hundreds of Stanford students and teach an in-person class of your creation to Bay Area High School students!

Our past teachers have offered classes on everything from Quantum Mechanics, Creative Writing, and Hacking for Beginners to Zumba, Science of Boba, and Art of Lady Gaga. You can teach as little as one 45-minute class to up to many hours-long classes! This is a chance for you to nerd out and share your interests with high school students!

Registering is as easy as 1,2,3!

As demand for AI data centers grows, running a large hardware fleet calls for new approaches to reliability, power efficiency, and capacity. Our speakers will discuss how trustworthy AI agents support fleet operations through fault diagnosis and power modeling, and how Meta tackles the sustainability side of hardware: measuring embodied carbon, extending equipment life, and enabling reliable reuse.

Help the Stanford Conservation steward Lagunita with a Halloween-themed volunteer workday! We will be picking up trash (ahhh!) and pulling invasive weeds (oh no!) to improve habitat for California tiger salamanders, among others local species.

Bring a water bottle, wear long pants and sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Costumes are highly encouraged! Come dressed as your favorite native organism for a special prize!

Apply to the Notation in Science Communication!

Do you love science but are eager for more creative opportunities to write and speak about it? Do you want to learn how to communicate technical information while also speaking in your own voice, language, and culture? Do you want to meet peers passionate about sharing all kinds of science with diverse audiences?

Then apply to join the Notation in Science Communication, a mini-minor designed to help you develop effective practices for communicating your scientific research to a wide range of audiences – all while completing your work in your major!

The Notation only requires 14-16 units of coursework and provides you with the opportunity to create an electronic portfolio as a capstone, showcasing your work in science communication. As an NSC student, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of modes of science communication including podcasting, opinion writing, storytelling, data visualization, and more.

When potential employers or graduate programs see that you have completed a Notation in Science Communication, they will know that you have documented expertise in communicating knowledge to other scientists and to wider public audiences. My name is Hargun, and I’m the Social Chair for the Stanford Undergraduate Research Association (SURA)! I wanted to reach out and share an event we’re hosting this week for anyone interested in research or just looking to learn more about getting involved at Stanford.

We’re hosting our SURA Fall Quarter Social at Treehouse! It’ll be a super casual opportunity to meet the SURA team, connect with other students interested in research, talk to upperclassmen about their research experiences, and ask any questions about getting started.

We’ll also be answering questions about our SURA committee applications, which are due 10/14 at midnight!
