🌽 Program Director Mary Dennis is ecstatic to serve Mountrail County's families in need of food. In the 14 years of her leading the Mountrail Community Food Pantry, Mary's favorite aspect of serving is seeing the positive reactions from her clients. To Mary, it shows her work does more than feeding families; it provides them hope and strength.

🥖 Since 2025, 215,000 pounds of food from Mary's organization were donated to feed families across Mountrail County. The Mountrail Community Food Pantry provides struggling community members with a wide selection of food, ranging from dairy to canned vegetables. In the coming years, Mary looks to add more food options and develop strategies for improving the food pantry's operation.

🏫 New Town teacher Laura Schmidt launched a schoolwide initiative to help students overcome academic struggles and promote literacy. Inspired by her own child's challenges, Laura became a teacher with a mission to help other students build stronger reading skills and academic confidence.
📕 That passion led her to bring a book vending machine to Edwin Loe Elementary School, giving students the opportunity to earn books through positive behavior and making reading more exciting and rewarding. The initiative expands access to literature, helping more students to experience the joy of owning a new book.

✨ Board Member Spotlight: Matt Evans
Matt enjoys serving as Chairperson of the JDA Board to help support Mountrail County's economy. He is active in the Stanley community as a business owner and as Vice President of the ND Auto Dealers Association Board. 🎣 In his free time, Matt fishes at Van Hook and hunts pheasant and deer with his son.

🎉 It's National Family Owned & Operated Businesses Day!
John Woodbury wanted to keep the tradition of feed manufacturing alive after the last feed rolling service in his corner of northwest North Dakota closed. He didn't want the people of Ross to lose access to an important local business, so he used his experience in livestock feed to start John Woodbury Custom Rolling.
💙 John’s family plays a major role in the business: John makes feed that is specific to each client. His wife, Julie, handles invoicing and bookkeeping. Their son, Wyatt, manages totes and repairs equipment. Together, the Woodbury family supports the Ross community in an area where livestock feed is in high demand.
🤝 With help from our Horizon Grant, he was able to purchase a skid steer with enough lift capacity to carry multiple feed totes and a laptop for tracking inventory.

✨ Board Member Spotlight: Tara Uran
Tara serves her community as a member of the MCJDA Board, the Stanley Park Board, the Mountrail County Soils Committee, and more!🪴Tara loves all things agriculture and enjoys farming alongside her father. When she's not busy being a green thumb, she loves playing volleyball, basketball, and bowling! 🎳Thank you for your dedication to our county, Tara!

💡 Innovator Highlight: Taryn Lumley
🏢 Established in Stanley in 2003, the Sibyl Center is a venue for both local and national talent. When Taryn Lumley joined the Sibyl Center's committee in 2013, he noticed the potential it held. While the Sibyl Center could seat an audience of 210, shows at the time brought in 20 to 40 people. In 2020, Taryn seized the opportunity to rebrand the Sibyl Center after becoming its president. Through our Horizon Grant and Community Grant, the center received improvements including roof and wall repairs and sound and lighting refurbishments.
🎵 As an experienced musician, Taryn has an eye (and ears) for quality. Each year, he seeks to round up talent for bigger audiences, which provides economic growth to Stanley's businesses and hotels. These innovations are done in honor of the Sibyl Center's "godfather," Don Hoirup, who prevented the teardown of the building in 2002 in favor of transforming it into the beloved venue it is today.
