We had a great time today at Second Saturday Story Time! We read about Rosie Revere, learning all about creativity, engineering, having “flops” and then trying again and again. We played “Engineer Says” and then used all sorts of random items to build creations of our imaginations.

And though we had many flops along the way (the tape won’t stick!), we persevered and built some really amazing contraptions - from a playground to rocket ships to robots!

Thanks to all who joined us today and remember: “Dream big, build bold, and don’t give up!”

Join us for a special story time featuring “Rosie Revere, Engineer” by Andrea Beaty! Follow Rosie’s journey as she learns that creativity, perseverance, and mistakes are all part of inventing something amazing.

After the story, kids will put their engineering skills to the test with a fun, hands-on building activity!

We had a fantastic time at yesterday’s Seaside Series with Jeryl Schriever and Mary Bonk as they recounted their round the country journey retracing the steps of suffragists Alice Burke and Nell Richardson on their historic journey in 1916 to raise awareness for women’s right to vote. Schriever, Bonk, and a team of dedicated volunteers took up the mantle of Burke and Richardson to promote the Equal Rights Amendment. We had a great time today at the Seaside Series with Flash! in the Pans band director Martin Conte! Not only was Martin’s presentation wonderful, the audience members had the opportunity to try their hands at the pans.

Look for SPL in Deer Isle Village for the annual Fourth of July parade at 10:00 a.m. today!

Come celebrate the Stonington Lobster Boat Races next weekend with a special guest author event at our next Second Saturday Story Time on July 11th at 10 AM.

Local author Melissa Jones-Bayley, and illustrators Rosalie and Gavin Bayley, will join us to read and share all about their book The Friendly Maine Lobstermen: A voyage of the Kieran-Scott, and then lead us in a fun, art related project. We will learn all about cooperation, sharing and being good stewards through the example set by the kind, hardworking lobstermen in this charming tale.

Melissa Jones-Bayley is a native of Stonington, on the island of Deer Isle, Maine, where she lives with her husband Chris and their two children, Rosalie, 17, and Gavin, 15. Fulfilling her dream of raising their two children on Deer Isle, immersed in the art community, is a crucial element of her inspiration.

Influenced by the island’s stunning landscapes, the ever-changing Atlantic Ocean, the salty air, and the rugged island way of life, Melissa and her children embark on a creative journey, weaving tales that reflect Melissa’s family history, their shared experiences, memories, and talents. Together, they craft stories that celebrate their hardworking community and honor family and friends. Gavin’s intricate pencil sketches and precise ink lines and Rosalie’s vibrant and emotion-evoking watercolor palette result in captivating illustrations that bring their stories to life.

Books and prints are currently for sale at the library and will also be available for purchase during the story time event.
