As a parent of a child of special needs and/or disabilities, it's important to remember not to focus on what they CANNOT DO, but what they CAN DO. Every day is a testament to their strength and resilience to keep trying and every day is another day on their journey to overcoming hurdles no one will ever understand. Celebrate the little moments just as much as the big moments!

Parenting children with special needs can sometimes feel overwhelming, but having a good support system will set you up for success. When you're starting to feel overwhelmed, reach out to friends and family, or your community and take advantage of respite for you some important YOU-time!

Be sure to set respectful boundaries with your children and those who engage with them, but always leave room for open communication, actively listen to your children's feelings and emotions.

Become an advocate on their behalf with everyone who engages with your child, from teachers, doctors, therapists, and professionals. You know your child best, so speak up for them.

Help set them up for success by creating a positive, sensory-friendly home environment, where they can interact safely with sights, sounds, tastes, smells and touching. Create a sensory-friendly play area, inside and outside the home where they can explore.

Let's be honest, parenting is hard. Parenting a child with special needs and/or disabilities is harder. And sometimes, it can start to feel overwhelming, or that other parents can't quite comprehend the challenges. And that's okay! Everyone parents differently and experiences parenting in different ways. But remember to ALWAYS give yourself some grace, especially on the hard days! But be sure to give grace to others when they don't understand the difficulty, but know that they are trying to understand and when you need a helping hand, there is always someone to help. You simply have to ask!💜💜
