It’s official, students are back to school! 📚

As another school year gets underway, we wanted to take a moment to look back at one of our favorite projects from this year’s KCCI Wall-A! initiative.
2026 Community Catalyst Lori takes us back to Sabal Palm Elementary to show off the finished fence art and share a little about the project.

Working with students, we explored what community means to them around the theme “Community is Family.” Their ideas and artwork came together in this colorful installation and created something that reflects the students, families, and community around them.

We hope everyone across Leon County Schools (and beyond!) has a great start to the new school year! ❤️

School’s back in session, and we’ve missed these kiddos! Earlier this year, students across Tallahassee helped bring back art and activate spaces on their campuses through KCCI’s WALL+A Community Catalyst initiative:

📚 Sabal Palm Elementary – 130+ fourth and fifth graders drew “what community meant to them,” and those personal artworks became the outdoor art exhibit for the neighborhood called, “Community is Family.” Go check it out!
🎒DeSoto Trail Elementary – the “Greetings from DeSoto” mural depicts the trailblazer spirit. It was conceptualized by school leaders, PTO and KCCI, and the idea was brought to life by two Chiles High School design students as they created a design made from pictures of real students at school activities.
✏️ Hartsfield Elementary – the original artistic crosswalk art found new life, reimagined as a mural that serves as a privacy fence for the playground. A win-win! Check out some of our favorite memories below ⬇️📸

More projects are already in the works for this school year, and we can’t wait to unveil them during Placemaking Week (really multiple weeks) and this winter.

Boulder, Colorado - where a lively college town meets mountain adventure.

Pedestrian-friendly streets, local shops, and the iconic Pearl Street Mall blend seamlessly with trails, parks, and the Flatirons, creating a downtown that encourages both connection and exploration. Nature and community come together to create such an amazing destination!

“KCCI is truly a model. What Tallahassee has built through KCCI is not common.” — Nancy Blum-Heintz, 2010 Community Catalyst

KCCI is sharing the stories of Community Catalysts whose leadership has helped shape our community.

Through the Southside Sense of Place initiative, Nancy experienced firsthand how bringing together residents, business leaders, nonprofits, and public officials can create lasting change.

Her story is a reminder that KCCI isn’t just about projects—it’s about building relationships, elevating community voices, and creating a stronger Tallahassee together.

💚 Thank you, Nancy, for being part of the KCCI legacy.

Women on Fire! Congratulations to KCCI Community Catlaysts Dr. Walissa Cobb and Tangela Lofton for their awards and recognization today at Tallahassee Woman Magazine’s Women Mean Business Expo and awards ceremony. And way to go Betsy Couch, a past KCCI Catlayst and KCCI’s executive director, for delivering an inspiring keynote about how real change happens when we are supported by the strong foundation of faith, family, community, and self; and how together we can use our voices to build the future we want for Tallahassee. Plus wow, KCCI Catalyat Quia Atkinson created the beautiful custom-art awards that were give out.

Meet the team behind all the recent growth around Tallahassee - KCCI’s 2026 Community Catalyst Team. The group is a diverse, skilled set of leaders who have come together to serve the community with their impactful ideas. With a wide range of experience, they have already created The Stacks, Leon County’s largest outdoor public mural system, and brought public art projects to the areas near four Leon County Schools.
