🔥 Flashback Fire Friday 🔥

On April 17, 1965, a fire tore through the Tallahassee Pharmacy at 1020 N. Monroe St., destroying half of the building’s roof and gutting the interior. Firefighters from all four city stations responded to the 3:20 p.m. call, with about 20 firefighters working to bring the fire under control by 4 p.m.

A separate trash fire was discovered at the rear of the building, leading Deputy Chief Morris Wainwright to question whether it had sparked the blaze or if it had been ignited by the fire itself.

On Friday, October 2, at approximately 1:22 a.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Teal Lane. Crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from a two-story residential structure.

Firefighters made entry into the structure and found heavy smoke and fire on the first floor. Crews quickly began extinguishing the fire while searching the structure for any possible occupants. No people were found inside the home at the time of the fire, but during the search, one cat was rescued from the structure. Unfortunately, two cats were found deceased.

The fire was quickly brought under control. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

The Tallahassee Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarms are one of the most important tools for protecting your family from a home fire. Smoke alarms provide an early warning, giving occupants valuable time to escape safely. Residents should have smoke alarms on every level of their home and near all sleeping areas and test them regularly to ensure they are working properly.

Getting to the roof is not always as simple as raising the ladder. 🚒

Yesterday, Station 16 trained on commercial roof access, where parapet walls can leave an 8-10 foot transition between the aerial ladder and the roof. Crews practiced positioning, ladder placement and safe roof access techniques for one of the unique challenges presented by large commercial buildings.

Train for the challenge before it becomes the call💪

TFD Responds to Structure Fire on Apalachee Parkway

At approximately 10:03 p.m. on September 27, the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) was dispatched to a reported outside fire in the 3500 block of Apalachee Parkway.

Firefighters arrived to find a large fire in a wooded area involving a vacant pole barn and threatening a nearby structure. Due to difficulty accessing the fire, crews extended approximately 450 feet of supply line into the wooded area with additional attack lines attached to begin suppression efforts.

Crews brought the fire under control within approximately 10 minutes, containing the fire with minimal spread and preventing it from reaching the nearby structure. No occupants or pets were located, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Responding units included E6, E16, E3, T16, B3, and FM1. TFD was assisted on scene by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department, and Leon County EMS.
