At approximately 11:00 p.m. on June 3, 2026, a Terre Haute Police Department officer was traveling northbound on 13th Street through the intersection at Wabash Avenue when a vehicle turned in front of the patrol vehicle, failing to yield the right-of-way and causing a collision.

The THPD officer sustained what are believed to be minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The officer was later treated and released. Occupants of the other vehicle declined medical treatment at the scene.

Through the investigation, including statements obtained from all parties involved, it was determined that the driver who failed to yield the right-of-way was distracted while entering the intersection.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene.

At the time of the crash, the THPD officer was on routine patrol.

Last month was a busy one for our Honor Guard as they participated in our own Fallen Officers Memorial Service and Watch for the Fallen. Members also had the privelage of honoring our fallen officers in Washington, D.C. and particpated in our local Memorial Day service to honor our fallen service men.

It was a busy month, but we are grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice!

THPD Online Store Now Open

The THPD Online Store is now live at the link below.

The first shirts offered this year will be dedicated to our fallen officers and the sacrifices they made in service to our community. All proceeds from shirt sales will support the THPD Memorial and Honor Guard programs, which help ensure our fallen are remembered and honored with the dignity they deserve.

Funds also assist with memorial services, ceremonial honors, and supporting the families of fallen officers both locally and across the nation during their time of need.

Thank you for helping us honor the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and for supporting the mission of the THPD Memorial and Honor Guard.

Never Forgotten. Always Honored.

Saturday evening, the Recovery Gala was held in Terre Haute, recognizing individuals who go above and beyond to support those battling addiction and working toward recovery.

Among those recognized was THPD’s own Officer Jacob Funkhouser, who was honored as Officer of the Year. This award reflects his commitment to helping people during some of the most difficult times in their lives and his willingness to connect them with resources and support when they need it most.

We are proud of Officer Funkhouser and grateful for the many local recovery advocates, treatment providers, counselors, peer support specialists, and community partners who work every day to help individuals and families affected by addiction.

Congratulations, Officer Funkhouser, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you to everyone in our recovery community for the difference you make every day.

“La Porte County friends and neighbors, we are asking for our community to rise up, rally together, and lift Deputy Jon Samuelson and his family in prayer and support during this incredibly challenging time.

Now more than ever, we need our residents across the county to stand together in strength, faith, and support for one of our own. Deputy Samuelson has dedicated his life to serving and protecting this county, and we ask everyone now to stand beside him and his loved ones with prayer and solidarity.

Please keep Jon, his family, and the entire LCSO law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers.”
