El Tecolote, located at 333 N. Lewis Road, has served authentic Mexican food since 1946...which means it turn 80 this year! It is the longest-operating restaurant in Ventura County.

World War II veteran Mike Loza originally opened El Tecolote in Moorpark. The owls occupying the trees surrounding the restaurant were the inspiration for the name El Tecolote (The Owl).

The cafe was moved to a small house in Camarillo in 1948. It was so small that a frustrated customer helped finance a move to its current location in 1952.

The Somis Nut House has served the cravings of Ventura County residents since 1959. Originally it was a walnut processing plant that processed locally grown walnuts in the area. Today the store offers a wide selection of nuts, interesting snacks, trail mixes, seeds, candies, dried fruits, other edibles and gift baskets. Located at 4475 E. Los Angeles Avenue. Walk-in hours are 9am to 5pm daily. www.somisnuthouse.com

Somis is an unincorporated community of about 3,000 residents that was established in 1892. The name Somis means “water of the scrub oak” in the Chumash language, indicating the presence of water.

The Downtown Ventura Promenade beachfront area stretches from Surfers' Point/Promenade Park at Figueroa Street and Shoreline Drive on the north, down the Promenade bike/walk path to the Ventura Pier. This is a popular area with lots of surfers, a kids' playground area just north of the pier and plenty of beach with lots of interesting looking rocks.

There are several restrooms in the area. Great place to go bike riding with the family. Plenty of parking in the area on the north end. On the south side by the pier you may need to pay for parking at the Crowne Plaza on Harbor Blvd east of California Street or at adjacent San Buenaventura State Beach.
