"I think I saw someone on the street wearing one of your hats!" Meet Tim Washburn, one of our amazing volunteers at The Market. For those who know him, he needs no introduction.
"I started making hats after a friend introduced me to Operation Unhoused Tulsans, which delivered food and other necessities to people experiencing homelessness in Tulsa. One of the things they urgently needed was hats because it was so darn cold outside. I had made some years ago and still had them, so I donated them. They quickly asked if I could make more, and the rest is history.
A friend of mine called me once and said, ‘Tim, I think I saw someone on the street wearing one of your hats!’ I don’t know if that was true, but I like to think it was.
I also began taking hats to the Be Heard Movement. Today, I have a stand at a local art gallery where I sell the hats I make. For every hat I sell, I donate one to someone in need.
That same desire to help people eventually brought me to Catholic Charities. My sister-in-law and brother already volunteered here, and they brought me along one day to see if I would like it. Boy, did I.
I started out helping people through the first aisle of The Market, and now I call out numbers when it is their turn to get food. What surprised me most was not only how many people needed help, but how many people were willing to give it.
I remember one client asking specifically for cans with pop-top lids because he didn’t have a can opener at home. It’s little things like that—things you might never think about—that just eat you up inside.
I’ve never seen any place quite like Catholic Charities. I love volunteering in The Market because it gives me the chance to be with people and serve them. But Catholic Charities has given something back to me, too.
I’ve experienced religious trauma in the past, and volunteering here has helped me process my faith and find healing through serving others. That’s a big part of why I keep doing this. Serving others is such a gift.”
Stories like this are the heart of Catholic Charities.
