We are continuing to closely monitor the tanker fires in Glenpool near Highway 75 following a lightning strike that affected three storage vessels.

While the incident is outside Tulsa, the Tulsa Fire Department and hazmat are assisting with the response and assessment. The City of Tulsa Department of Emergency Management is also working closely with Tulsa County Emergency Management and other area partners.

We are working with our partners to monitor conditions and assess any potential impacts on the Tulsa area. We will share guidance as information becomes available.

For now, please continue to avoid the area and allow emergency crews to safely respond.

The rain is coming down hard across the area. If you’re on the road, please slow down, turn on your headlights, and leave plenty of space between your vehicle and others.

If you encounter standing water on a roadway, do not drive through it. The depth and condition of the road beneath the water may not be visible.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Give stormwater infrastructure time to do its job and move water away from streets as the storm passes. A few extra minutes of patience can help keep you and others safe.

Please use caution, stay alert, and travel safely.

Each year in the month of August, Tulsa utility customers have the option to change their enrollment status in the EMSAcare program. You may choose to opt in or opt out of the program.

EMSAcare is a subscription program by EMSA (Emergency Medical Services Authority) that covers the costs of emergency medical ambulance transport for all permanent members of households that participate in the program. EMSAcare subscribers either with or without health insurance pay no additional out-of-pocket costs – such as co-payments or deductibles – for emergency ambulance services.

If you are already enrolled in EMSAcare you do not need to do anything to stay enrolled. The EMSAcare monthly fee will continue to be charged to your utility bill each month. To check if you are currently enrolled, you can look on your water bill for a line item titled “EMSA Medical Services Program.”

If you are not currently enrolled in EMSAcare but would like to sign up, you can enroll online at www.cityoftulsa.org/utilities or by contacting the Customer Care Center at (918) 596-9511, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or through the IVR system at any time. Customers also may cancel their EMSAcare service using the same contact information.

For emergency ambulance transports through EMSAcare, EMSA will bill Medicare, Medicaid, insurance providers, or another third party and accept that payment as payment in full. For uninsured patients, EMSAcare will cover the costs of qualified emergency medical transports. For complete details visit www.emsaonline.com

Sharing an important reminder from our friends at the National Weather Service in Tulsa: with excessive heat in the forecast, it’s critical to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat-related illness can develop faster than you may realize and can quickly become a serious medical emergency.

Take precautions, stay hydrated, limit time outdoors when possible, and check on family members, neighbors, and pets. Review the warning signs and know when it’s time to seek medical attention.

As the excessive heat continues it is a good idea to remember warning signs of heat illness. Even brief exposure in the right conditions can bring on heat exhaustion. Overnight temperatures also remain very warm during heat waves which compounds the effects of heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups.

DROUGHT DOESN'T STOP AT YOUR LAWN.

It cracks the pipes underneath, too.

A few quick checks to protect your home:

‣ Walk your yard for cracked or sunken soil near sewer lines.
‣ Fix slow leaks at spigots and hoses.
‣ Know where your shutoff valve is.
‣ Keep sewer cleanouts clear and visible.
‣ Keep soil moisture even around your foundation.
‣ Water trees by slowly soaking the roots at the base of the trunk, away from sewer lines.
‣ Report street-level leaks.

Small checks now save big repairs later.

Back-to-school means more school buses on our roads - and that means it’s time for all of us to slow down and pay attention.

When a school bus stops and extends its stop arm with flashing red lights, drivers from both directions must stop and remain stopped until the stop arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving again.

Children may cross the street unexpectedly to get on or off the bus, and they can be difficult to see, especially during busy morning and afternoon commutes.

A few extra seconds of patience can help keep our students safe as they head back to school. Slow down, stay alert, and stop for school buses.
