Grove students shined during their first character assembly of the new year, paying tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrating the trait “generosity.”

Several classes and students were honored for everything from their efforts to exemplify generosity to keeping the restroom clean to keeping students safe courtesy safety patrol.

Fifth graders Robert Gaygay and Odin Cole served as masters of ceremony with assists from Assistant Principal Donna Ross, Community Schools Coordinator Shiloh Wolf and P.E. teacher Kendall Roberts. Principal Ashley Hamilton greeted families as they entered the school.

Grove fifth grader Luis Patino Soriano, dressed in his finest, wowed students and families with his operatic tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month while students Frida Toribio and Mia Rosas and second grade teacher Claudia Fernandez performed two traditional Latin American dances while wearing festive dresses.

Teacher Branson Ewing and his puppet friend, Kermit the Frog, sang "Rainbow Connection" from "The Muppet Movie."

Individual students were honored with certificates and posed for pictures for their families at the assembly’s conclusion.

Ahoy, readers! Captain Redhawk, aka Union Superintendent Dr. John Federline, returned to Grove Elementary for the third year in a row to celebrate reading and International Talk Like a Pirate Day. From finding pirates roaming the halls and visiting classrooms to reading “Pirates Go to School” and “How I Became a Pirate” to Grove’s second graders and William White’s fourth-grade class, Captain Redhawk helped make reading an adventure. And, of course, there was plenty of pirate talk along the way!

Captain Redhawk aka Union Superintendent Dr. John Federline returned to Grove Elementary for a third year this moning to help second graders and some fourth graderrs celebrate reading and International Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Captain Redhawk read the book, "Pirates Go To School," and the book “How I Became A Pirate" during a gathering in the media center. Throughout the school many students and staff dressed up as pirates for International Talk Like A Pirate Day, which was created in 1995 in jest but has since grown in popularity each year.
