Nurse Honor Guard of West Alabama We are a group of active and retired nurse volunteers who provide honor guard service to fallen nurses.

We perform a service similar to the military & police department, Dressed in traditional white uniform, we also provide living and retirement tributes.

The Nightingale Tribute is a solemn ceremony used by Nurse Honor Guards to honor a nurse who has passed away. It recognizes the nurse’s life of service, compassion, dedication, and commitment to the nursing profession.

“Nurse Lorene Was There”
When a calming, quiet presence was all that was needed
Nurse Lorene was there.

In the excitement and miracle of birth or in the mystery and loss of life, Nurse Lorene was there.

When a silent glance could uplift a patient, family member or friend, Nurse Lorene was there.

At those times when the unexplainable needed to be explained,Nurse Lorene was there.

When the situation demanded a swift foot and sharp mind, Nurse Lorene was there.

When a gentle touch, a firm push, or an encouraging word was needed,
Nurse Lorene was there.

To witness humanity, its beauty, in good times and bad, without judgment, Nurse Lorene was there.

To embrace the woes of the world, Nurse Lorene was there.

And now, that it is time to be at the Greater One’s side,
Nurse Lorene IS there.

Purpose — Honor
To honor nurses by recognizing their dedication, service, compassion, and commitment to the nursing profession.

Mission — Nurses Honoring Nurses
To spread awareness of the Nurse Honor Guard and provide meaningful tributes that celebrate and honor nurses throughout our communities.

Vision — No Nurse Forgotten
To ensure that a Nurse Honor Guard member is available to honor every nurse, so that no nurse is ever forgotten.

The Nurse Honor Guard of West Alabama is a member of the National Nurse Honor Guard Coalition and the Alabama Nurse Honor Guards.

Give & Take
Life is about give and take.

There will be seasons when you have more to give and seasons when you need to receive. Don’t be afraid to pour into others—but remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

True relationships, meaningful work, and strong communities are built on balance, reciprocity, grace, and understanding.

Give encouragement.
Give kindness.
Give your time.
Give love.

And when your turn comes to receive, receive without guilt.

Because sometimes your greatest gift to someone else is allowing them the opportunity to give to you.

Give when you can. Receive when you need. Grow together.

Today, we are proud to shine the spotlight on Alice Barr, a dedicated nurse with more than 25 years of nursing experience. Throughout her career, Alice has served in a variety of roles, including Staff Nurse, Team Leader, Nurse Manager, and OR Educator.

The heart of the Living Tribute is: “Don’t wait until the funeral to give a nurse their flowers. Give them their flowers NOW.”

It is an opportunity for colleagues, family, friends, and the nursing community to come together and say:

“We see you.
We appreciate you.
We honor you.
We celebrate you.”

A Living Tribute is not a farewell—it is a celebration.
It reminds us that nurses deserve to know how much their lives and service have meant to others while they are here to receive the honor.

Honoring a Nurse’s Final Call

The Nurse Honor Guard is a volunteer group of nurses who come together to pay a final tribute to a deceased nursing colleague at a funeral, memorial, or graveside service.

Much like the honors given by the military or firefighters, Nurse Honor Guards perform the traditional Nightingale Tribute—a solemn ceremony that officially releases the nurse from their professional duties and honors their years of service, compassion, and dedication to others.

The lamp is extinguished.
The rose is laid to rest.
The nurse’s final call is answered.

It is more than a ceremony. It is a promise from one nurse to another:

“You will not be forgotten.”
