For two months, my sixteen-year-old son told me he was spending every weekend at his best friend's house. Then his friend's mother called and asked something that left me frozen. “Laura, when is Cole coming home? He's been staying with you every weekend!” The problem was, Nathan had been telling me the exact opposite.
“Denise, that can't be right. Nathan went over to your place yesterday!” I answered.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Denise said quietly, “Laura, Nathan hasn't been at my house in weeks.”
I nearly dropped my coffee mug.
“But every Friday, he tells me he's going to stay with Cole!”
“And Cole tells me he's spending Friday and Saturday nights with Nathan!”
My stomach tightened.
The boys had been best friends since they started kindergarten. They were both sixteen now, and for the previous two months, we'd assumed they were together every weekend.
But it appeared we'd both been fooled.
“Denise, when did you last see Nathan in person?”
“I think it was the beginning of August. What about Cole? When did you last see him?”
“About the same time.”
Eight weekends had passed.
Eight weekends when neither mother knew where her child was sleeping.
Where had they really been going?
I grabbed my phone and called Nathan.
It went straight to voicemail.
I dialed a second time.
Still nothing.
“Cole isn't answering me either!” Denise exclaimed, panic creeping into her voice.
I opened my conversation with Nathan and read his most recent text.
“Hey Mom, Cole and I grabbed some pizza. Don't wait up for me. Love you.”
My fingers trembled as I typed my response.
“Nathan, I found out you're not staying with Cole. Call me right now.”
The message was delivered.
But there was no indication he'd read it.
“Laura,” Denise whispered, “what if something terrible has happened?”
“Don't say that. We don't know anything yet.”
We started contacting their classmates and other friends.
Nobody could tell us where they were.
Denise drove around checking their usual hangouts.
She came back without a single clue.
By midnight, Denise was sitting at my kitchen table.
Both of us kept staring at our phones, hoping one would ring.
“Laura, has Nathan been acting unusual recently?” she finally asked.
I thought about the past several Sundays.
Every time Nathan came home, he seemed completely worn out.
He'd head directly upstairs to shower.
And whenever I asked what he and Cole had done, he gave me brief, vague answers.
“I assumed he just wanted more privacy now that he's getting older,” I confessed.
Denise buried her face in her hands.
The hours dragged by.
By four o'clock in the morning, we'd decided it was time to call the police.
Then, at exactly 4:37 a.m., I heard a key turning in the lock of my front door.
I turned toward the hallway.
Nathan walked inside.
I shot out of my seat.
“Nathan! Where on earth have you been? Do you have any idea how worried we are?!”
He stopped immediately.
I looked behind him.
Cole wasn't there.
“Mom, listen, I can explain—”
“No, Nathan! You've been deceiving us for two whole months! I want the truth. Where have you actually been staying every weekend?”
For a few seconds, he wouldn't look at me.
Then he slowly raised his head.
And I finally saw something I'd somehow failed to notice before.
The anger drained out of me.
I caught hold of the doorframe because my legs suddenly felt unsteady.
“Oh, Nathan...” I whispered. “What have you done? Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you ask me for help?” Type KEYS and I'll continue.
