Members of the Local attended Challenger Day for the District 19 Challenger League, which was held at Dermond Field this past weekend.

The league is an adaptive baseball program for those who have physical and developmental challenges. These players demonstrate their teamwork and sportsmanship to their fans and get to improve their self esteem because of this program.

As usual, Firefighter Paul McCormick was joined by several past and present members of the department to provide hot dogs for the event for all those in attendance to enjoy.

We are humbled to be part of the Upper Darby community, and look forward to supporting you whenever and wherever we can!

Your Upper Darby Professional Firefighters, IAFF local 2493, wishes everyone a safe Memorial Day.

Our A Platoon members convened this evening at Station 26’s quarters for a traditional BBQ. In true Memorial Day fashion we honored our fallen US service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. Today is a reminder to us all that freedom is never free.

“All gave some; some gave all.”

In addition to responding to calls for service during their BBQ; shortly after the companies dispersed from dinner they were dispatched to the 500 block of Snowden Rd for a vehicle fire. Engine 36 arrived and requested the call be upgraded to a building fire response due to the proximity of the vehicle to the structure. That upgrade dispatches all five companies to the scene. Engine 36 made quick work of the fire, while Truck 37 checked the building for extension. Ultimately the vehicle fire was held to Engine 36 and Truck 37.

At 2am, A platoon members of Local 2493 responded along with Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Co. to a building fire on the 200 block of Rocklyn Rd. Initial reports from Delaware County Emergency Services 911 indicated that a civilian may have be trapped inside the home. Engine 36 and Truck 37 arriving on scene and observed smoke showing from the front, Squad 26 arrived shortly after and reported that they had an apparent basement fire that was traveling the outside of the building up to the roof. Fortunately, all occupants had safety evacuated prior to our arrival. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

At approximately 4pm, Wednesday afternoon, D-Platoon companies heard a Millbourne Borough Police Department officer requesting the Fire Department be dispatched for smoke coming from an apartment and began heading that way.

While en route Delaware County Emergency Services 911 advised the companies that there was entrapment, as occupants were still inside. Truck 37 arrived on location confirming a working fire with entrapment, with fire on the top floor. As Engine 36 stretched a hose line, and the remaining township companies converged on the scene, Truck 37’s crew entered the building from both sides and a victim was quickly located on the second floor. Members of Truck 37 and Engine 36 quickly removed the occupant to the care of EMS and immediately re-entered to continue extinguishment and additional searches.

Squad 26, Quint 74, and Engine 20 pulled an additional hand line and assisted with searches, ventilation, and extinguishment. The fire was under control by the first 10 minute mark, with 1 occupant removed and transported, and 1 firefighter transported for evaluation. That member was quickly released shortly after.

Strong work to all of our members and all involved! 👏

With the warmer weather upon us, crews have been taking advantage to get some training in. Here the A Platoon members discuss ropes, rigging and rappelling at the Heather Rd parking garage earlier this week, led by Captains Caroluzzi and Captain Lindsay.
