Hiram Rhodes Revels-Former United States Senator
Born: September 27, 1827

Years of Service: 1863-1865

Hiram Rhodes Revels was a Republican U.S. Senator, minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and a college administrator. Born free in North Carolina, he later lived and worked in Ohio, where he voted before the Civil
War. He became the first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress when he was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican to represent Mississippi in 1870 and 1871 during the Reconstruction era. After two days
of heated debate on the floor of the US Senate, and with spectators packing the Senate galleries to see this groundbreaking event, a former Union Army chaplain, Mississippi's Hiram Revels is sworn in as that state's US senator.

RIDE THE WIND: The Bessie Stringfield Story

Black History Month

Theme: Honoring the Past, Securing the Future

The Bessie Stringfield Story

Facts:

In 1930 Bessie Stringfield became the first African American woman to ride
her motorcycle across the United States solo. Her feat was credited with
breaking down barriers for both women and African-American motorcyclists.

Born Betsy Leonora Ellis on February 9, 1911, in Kingston, Jamaica, she was
the daughter of Maria Ellis, a domestic servant, and James Ferguson, her
employer. Betsy and her parents migrated to Boston, Massachusetts but both
died of smallpox. Orphaned when Betsy was five years old, she was adopted by
a wealthy Irish woman who raised her as a Catholic. It is unclear when and
why Bessie rather than Betsy became her given name. On Bessie's sixteenth
birthday, her mother gave her a motorcycle, "even though good girls didn't
ride motorcycles."

During World War II, Bessie Ellis worked for the U.S. Army as a civilian
motorcycle dispatch rider, carrying documents between domestic bases on her
Harley-Davidson bike. The only woman in her unit, she completed rigorous
training maneuvers including learning how to weave a makeshift bridge from
rope and tree limbs to cross swamps. Ellis regularly encountered racial
prejudice while on the road. Once she was followed by a man in a pickup
truck who deliberately ran her into a ditch, violently knocking her off her
bike.

A decade later, the AMA instituted the Bessie Stringfield Award to honor
women who are leaders in motorcycling. In 2002 she was inducted into the
Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (1945-1946)

Fact: The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed "Six Triple Eight", was an all-African-American female battalion serving overseas which was responsible for clearing an immense backlog of mail, ensuring that communication was effective.

In November 1944, despite the slow recruitment of volunteers, a battalion of 817 (later 824) enlisted personnel and 31 officers, all African American women drawn from the WACs, the Army Service Forces, and the Army Air Forces, was created which was eventually designated as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The 6888th battalion was trained for their overseas mission at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion were awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal for their service. Mary Ragland and Alyce Dixon, who were members of the 6888th, were honored by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in 2009.

Good afternoon, 412th TEC Soldiers and Families. We honor the past and secure the future during Black History Month by showcasing influential individuals during the month of February.

Ron Husband is an American character animator known for his work at Walt
Disney Feature Animation, where he has worked since 1975. He was one of the
first African-American animators. and, it is argued, the first African-American animator for Disney.

Two of his most famous assignments while at Disney were as supervising
animator for Djali in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Elk in the Firebird
Suite - 1919 Version segment of Fantasia 2000 and Doctor Joshua Strongbear
Sweet in Atlantis: The Lost Empire. He is currently working at Disney in
the Publishing Group, as an illustrator.

Salute to his accomplishments, example and legacy.
