West Harrison Fire Department

While members of the West Harrison Fire Department, Purchase Fire Department, and Harrison Fire Department attended funeral services for Harrison Firefighter Kenny Fusco, mutual aid coverage was provided by Central Nyack Engine 2, Mount Kisco Tower Ladder 14, and Mamaroneck Engine 42.

At approximately 10:30 AM, the West Harrison Fire District received a report from a homeowner stating smoke was coming from the walls of their residence. The initial structure fire dispatch brought all three standby companies to the scene along with Car 2501 and Engine 266.

Upon arrival, Car 2501 encountered a moderate smoke condition in the basement with smoke pushing through the floorboards on the first floor. Due to the home being set back from the roadway, Mount Kisco Tower Ladder 14 was directed to back down the driveway for access while Central Nyack Engine 2 stretched a handline to the basement entrance. Engine 266 secured a water supply and laid into Central Nyack’s apparatus, while firefighters from Mamaroneck Engine 42 assisted with locating and extinguishing the fire.

After opening up walls and conducting an extensive investigation, crews located the fire concealed between the basement ceiling and first-floor walls. Through the quick and coordinated efforts of all responding personnel, the fire was contained before it could spread further throughout the structure. (The fire was caused secondary to a plumber soldering a waterline) The incident was placed under control shortly thereafter.

The West Harrison Fire Department would like to thank all responding mutual aid companies for their rapid response, professionalism, and aggressive firefighting efforts. This incident serves as another strong example of the importance of mutual aid and the seamless cooperation between departments from across and beyond the county. The teamwork displayed on scene ensured the incident was handled safely, efficiently, and effectively.

Statement from Harrison Fire Department on the Passing of Firefighter Kenneth J. Fusco.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Firefighter Kenneth J Fusco, a dedicated member of the Harrison Fire Department. He died on May 18, 2026 after a courageous battle with 911 related illnesses from his service at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Firefighter Fusco proudly served the Harrison Fire Department for 45 years. On September 11th and in the months that followed, he selflessly worked at Ground Zero in the rescue and recovery efforts, breathing in the toxic dust and debris that would later claim so many lives including his. His commitment to duty and to the people of Harrison exemplified the very best of our profession.
The long term effects of exposure to the World Trade Center toxins ultimately took his life. Today we recognize this loss as a line-of-duty death, another painful reminder that the attacks of 9/11 continue to claim members of the fire service long after the towers fell.
On behalf of the entire Harrison Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to his entire family and all those who loved him. We stand with you in grief and will continue to support you in the days and months ahead.
Firefighter Fusco will be remembered not only for his bravery on 9/11, but for a lifetime of service, mentorship, and brotherhood within the fire service. He was a pillar in the Harrison community and touched many lives with his kind heart and generous nature.
As we continue to lose brave firefighters to 9/11 related illnesses, we are reminded of our duty to those still fighting. We urge continued full funding of the World Trade Center Health Program to ensure every responder receives the care they earned and deserve.
Firefighter Fusco will forever be part of our department’s history and our collective memory. We will never forget.

Last night, members of the West Harrison Fire Dept conducted our weekly drill at our training facility. The topic of drill, was on VEIS (Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search). This is a high-risk,, rapid-rescue firefighting tactic used to save victims in bedrooms or separated rooms by entering through a window. Firefighters Vent the window, Enter the room, Isolate it by closing the door to stop smoke/fire, and Search for victims.

Constant training ensures we maintain optimal readiness whenever emergencies may happen.
