Great news coming out of Wheeling Middle School for several 8th grade Wildcats!

A group of 8th-grade students from Mrs. Strope’s 4th-period Social Studies class isn’t just learning about change, they’re creating it.

The team’s anti-va**ng public policy proposal has been officially selected to represent the state of West Virginia at the National Project Citizen Showcase this summer in the middle school division.

Project Citizen, a program administered by the Center for Civic Education, requires students to monitor public policy, identify a community problem, and develop a systematic government solution. This project-based learning style of education not only invests students in real-life scenarios, it has the potential to create actual change.

This Wheeling Middle School class outperformed official teams from across the state with their comprehensive proposal for a mandatory, nine-week anti-va**ng curriculum rotation. According to Strope, The class took a unique approach to the problem of va**ng. They recognized that discipline for va**ng is present, but felt that an educational component designed for kids could make a lasting impact.

Several judges felt this specific project was among the best they’d ever seen.

The 15 students moving on to the national evaluation are: Tegan Berisford, Brogan Brown, Cor'Dayzha Byrd, Julia Cronin, Tyler Definbaugh, Olivia Diehl, Ava Dominquez, Joseph Ewers, Mason Kuthy, Paxton Mathews, Micah McCardle, Penelope Mohring, Arden Mowder, Brooklyn Quinn, and Chanze Snodgrass.

Talk about an !

Their national level evaluation is scheduled for July, and we have no doubt this crew will crush it!

The program, provided under the West Virginia Department of Education, offers information to families interested in exploring literacy and learning from everyday household items.
