The GEAR UP grant partnered with the University of Washington to host this event specifically for all the GEAR UP students in south King County. 13 students from Cascade attended this event centered on Neurology.

Students had the opportunity to 
• Practice sutures
• Hold actual human brains  [🤯]
• Learn about signs of a stroke
• participate in a simulated spinal surgery
• and learn from an Optamologist about the eyes

This past Saturday, GEAR UP Staff took 25 students on a “Doctor for a Day” field trip to the University of Washington’s Health and Sciences Department. Students had the opportunity to connect with practicing doctors, resident physicians, and researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

During the visit, students learned about the causes of cancer, including genetics and controllable factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and diet. They practiced sutures, made DNA with gummy bears and red vines, practiced ultrasounds and got to see/touch REAL human organs that have been donated for research! This was an eye-opening experience that has piqued their interest in pursuing a future in healthcare.
