Thoughts and prayers are not enough.

After last night’s attack at Central Synagogue, we have to confront the rhetoric that creates a climate where Jews are scapegoated and targeted.

Israel is not the cause of America’s problems. Neither are Jews.

We need solutions—not scapegoats.

Words matter.

Public discourse does not exist in a vacuum. The issues leaders choose to emphasize, the language they use, and the messages they amplify shape the environment we all share.

This does not mean criticism of Israel causes antisemitism, or that political speech alone causes violence. It does mean that elected officials have a responsibility to consider how their words are heard—especially in a city with the largest Jewish population outside Israel.

This conversation comes at a time when antisemitism is not theoretical. Recent incidents, including antisemitic “Nein Juden” graffiti found inside a New York City subway car, remind us that hate can move from words into public spaces and actions.

We must be able to debate foreign policy vigorously while also recognizing the responsibility leaders have to ensure that public discourse does not make antisemitism easier to normalize.
