Happy World Environment Day! 🌍 Today, June 5th, is a global reminder that the choices we make about energy, infrastructure, and innovation shape the planet we leave behind. At NYPA, that reminder hits close to home, because it's literally our job.

Here's a fun fact: over 80% of the electricity NYPA produces comes from clean, renewable hydropower.

New York has set some of the boldest climate targets in the nation: 70% renewable energy by 2030, a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, and economywide carbon neutrality by mid-century. NYPA is at the center of making that happen.

HERE'S A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT WE'RE DOING

☀️Going renewable: Developing solar, wind, battery storage, green hydrogen, and geothermal projects across New York State to expand our clean energy portfolio.

🏢Decarbonizing state buildings: Leading the Decarbonization Leadership Program to cut carbon emissions at 15 of New York's highest-emitting state facilities.

🔌Expanding EV charging: Rolling out EV charging infrastructure across the state as part of New York's clean transportation push.

🍃Building the green workforce: Investing $20M+ in clean energy workforce development and training so New Yorkers can lead the transition.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Investing in communities: Directing clean energy benefits to disadvantaged communities — because a just transition means no one gets left behind.

Every kilowatt of clean power, every upgraded building, every trained worker — it all adds up. And on World Environment Day, we're reminded of exactly why it matters.

What are you doing to power a cleaner tomorrow? Let us know in the comments. 👇

Queens is going electric!

NYPA and New York City recently opened new EVolve NY fast-charging sites for electric vehicles in Bayside and Rosedale. A Sunnyside location is coming in June. Rockaway Park is next and Ditmars and Steinway will begin installation later in the year.

NYPA’s collaboration with NYC Department of Transportation will ultimately bring 66 chargers to 10 NYC sites as part of the EVolve NY network throughout New York State.

ICYMI: Our Environmental Justice team hosted the 3rd Annual Empowered Schools Summit and the energy in that room was everything.

Students stepped up to present capstone projects on energy conservation and sustainability, wrapping up a full year of work in this program. Across six regions, more than 500 students learned how energy works, how to save it & how to build careers around it.

Our VP of Environmental Justice Kaela Mainsah said it best: the next NYPA engineer might have been in that room. We believe it.

The next generation of climate leaders is already charting the course.

Students from Uniondale recently had the opportunity to connect hands-on learning with climate education; exploring sustainability, environmental stewardship and the growing clean energy economy in New York.

At NYPA, we’re proud to support programs and partnerships that expose students to real-world experiences, spark curiosity and help build pathways into STEM and clean energy careers. Investing in young people today helps power a more sustainable tomorrow.

This Memorial Day, we stand together to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

From the rivers and reservoirs that power New York, to the 524 miles of historic waterways that connect our communities: everything we steward exists because of the sacrifices made by those who came before us.

As you spend this weekend on the water, on the road, or with the people you love, we hope you'll take a moment to remember why we're fortunate enough to do so.

Heads up for some fun this weekend! The lower and upper reservoirs at the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Project will reopen for the recreational boating season tomorrow - Saturday, May 23.

The Mine Kill State Park boat launch, which provides access to the lower reservoir, has been fully rehabilitated. Upgrades include designated eagle‑watching areas and a new kayak storage building that is scheduled to open later this summer.

Additionally, the public fishing access area along the Schoharie Creek below the lower reservoir is open for the season. NYPA stocks the upper and lower reservoir annually with brook and brown trout in the spring, and walleye in the late summer.

Be safe! 🚤⛵🚣‍♂️
