Scores of Royal terns passing overhead chattering away as they head home to roost.

I sat mesmerized & surrounded by Hundreds of Royal Terns resting, grooming & communicating on the beach at sunset while the full moon rose over the ocean.
This drunken a-hole had to scare them all away?!

The endangered Finback whale that washed up in waters near LBI last weekend is the same species of whale that washed ashore here on Two Mile Beach Unit in 2003.

Back then the lower jawbone & a few smaller bones were able to be salvaged by USFWS & were put in storage until it could be figured out how to display for educational purpose.

Last Fall with the help of Refuge volunteers the bones were removed from storage & the decaying bones were painstakingly restored by refuge volunteers Pat & Frank Dorr who then erected them outside our visitor center here in May.

Coming is after the Blue whale in size, Finbacks are the 2nd longest species of whale in the world.
The size of the erected jaw bone dwarfs visitors & has made the erected jaw bone a popular photo op at the refuge.
Whales have been around for 50 million years!
The world of whales is fascinating & hopefully these sad appearances stoke the imagination to research their life & their plight.

It's heartbreaking that these magnificent creatures come to such a violet demise.

What lovely weather after that storm last night!
Plan to get outside before packing it up for the beach & boardwalk & enjoy some calm time this weekend:

Saturday at 9 AM
Take this fun & peaceful guided Nature Walk with your family.
We loan binoculars for viewing the many species of birds, butterflies & the pollinating plants blooming or about to.
A happy crowd enjoyed it last weekend. (See below photos)

On Sunday 9:30AM
Bring your school age kids to learn how to stop, look & listen & become observant explorers! Every kid gets a notebook w/ a picture guide to record what they see and hear with the help of our engaging naturalists Kaylee & Ezzy.

Sadly, this past weekend the carcass of an endangered 46' female Finback whale surfaced near Long Beach Island State Park. Marine Mammal Stranding Center is performing a necropsy although the carcass is badly deteriorated.
Finback whales generally live in deep waters but sometimes follow other mammals to feed closer to shore.
