Lyon County Board of County Commissioners Meeting Summary ― August 20, 2026
Yerington, Nevada – The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to hear presentations, conduct public hearings, and take action on several significant items. Highlights from the meeting include:
Awards & Recognition
Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope presented awards to the following:
Deputy Benjamin Beck of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Kyle Day of the Nevada Department of Corrections, and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Dispatchers Kyara Davis and Sarah Walker were presented with Life Saving Awards for their quick thinking, professionalism, and decisive actions during a medical emergency on July 26, 2026 when a 52-year-old man became unresponsive and was not breathing. Mr. Day during his off-duty hours witnessed his neighbor collapse and immediately began CPR. Deputy Beck arrived shortly afterward, continued CPR, and deployed an AED until paramedics arrived. Dispatchers Davis and Walker remained calm and professional throughout the emergency, providing clear communication and support that directly contributed to the successful resuscitation of the patient. Their teamwork, composure, and rapid response made a lifesaving difference.
In addition, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Nathan Cooper, Dawson Fettic, and Jeremy Patch were presented with Meritorious Awards in recognition of their courageous actions during a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Yellow Jacket Road in Dayton on July 31, 2026. The deputies demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment to public safety by entering a structure, threatened by rapidly spreading fire, to assist in the rescue of occupants. Their actions helped ensure all occupants safely evacuated the home without injury.
Lyon County is proud to recognize these heroic individuals and their dedication to protecting and serving our community. Thank you for your service and commitment!
Planning Items
Lyon County Commissioners approved a request by NV Energy for an Amendment to the Conditional Use Permit, authorizing the constructions of the three 345-kV transmission lines as part of the Greenlink West Transmission Line Project. The proposed amendment specifically addresses approximately 10 miles of transmission line north of US Highway 50 from Dayton, Stagecoach and Silver Springs to the Storey County Line, crossing portions of 15 parcels.
County Ordinances
Commissioner Jacobson proposed an ordinance amending Lyon County Development Code Title 15, Chapter 320, Table 4 thereby establishing Post-Secondary, Trade, or Technical Education as a Conditional Use in the Heavy Industrial-Rural and Heavy Industrial-Suburban zoning districts.
Other Board Actions
Bill Draft Request for 84th Nevada Legislature – The Board approved a resolution requesting a Bill Draft for the 84th Nevada Legislature establishing a statutory funding formula for county assessments for child protective services that better aligns county financial responsibility with service demand, and provides incentives for counties to implement successful prevention programs that reduce utilization of child protective services.
Utilities Project Update – The Board received a project update from Lyon County Utilities Engineer, Kishora Panda. Lyon County continues to invest in critical water and wastewater infrastructure improvements throughout the community. Major projects include the ongoing Highway 50/Dayton Valley Road sewer replacement, expansion of the Rolling A Wastewater Treatment Facility, and planned improvements to water and wastewater systems in Dayton, Silver Springs, and Rose Peak. These projects will improve system reliability, increase capacity, and support the county’s continued growth. The full presentation can be found in meeting back up materials.
Commissioners also approved Amendment No. 3 to Task Order 116, Rolling 'A' Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) Phase 4 Expansion Project - Construction Administration, with DOWL (previously Farr West Engineering) in an amount to not exceed $100,000 from the Dayton Sewer Fund. to extend additional construction administration and engineering services required to complete the project.
Donation – Lyon County accepted a donation from Bill Miles of a large, framed historic map dating to the early 1920s that depicts Lyon County as it appeared during that era, including its historic railway lines. The map will be displayed outside the County Commission Chambers at the Lyon County Administrative Complex in Yerington.
