Strengthening Communities, Empowering People Arizona's response to this requirement was to create 6 regional planning districts.

In the late 1960's the federal government began requiring increased collaborative planning with the goal of improved uniformity, long-range planning and closer program coordination across city, town, county and state boundaries. The Councils of Governments, AKA Regional Councils, are the voluntary associations within these planning districts. WACOG serves the Region IV planning district, covering

Mohave, La Paz and Yuma Counties. WACOG was created to: improve efficiencies and coordination across multiple federal programs; develop long-range strategies to address needs, particularly in areas of transportation, the environment and human services; and, be a mechanism to address issues such as communication, planning, policymaking, coordination, advocacy and technical assistance.

The WACOG team including Executive Director Veronica Shorr, Deputy Director Gina Whittington, Thomas Ryan Director of Housing, Family and Community, was at this week’s Rural Policy Forum in Kingman, with our Executive Board members, including board Chair Cecilia McCollough (Wellton), Mayor Ken Watkins (Kingman), Mayor Howard Ream (Colorado City), and County Board Supervisor Travis Lingenfelter (District 1, Mohave), joining regional partners to discuss the issues and opportunities shaping rural Arizona.

As the Council of Governments for Yuma, La Paz, and Mohave counties, we know that strong communities are built through collaboration. Our Executive Board, made up of local elected leaders from the communities we serve, plays a vital role in guiding WACOG’s work and ensuring our programs reflect the needs of the people they represent.

We were also proud to serve as a sponsor of this year’s Rural Policy Forum, investing in conversations that strengthen the region we call home.

A huge thank you to Arizona Complete Health for awarding WACOG a $100,000 Capital Improvement Grant to strengthen our technology infrastructure.

This investment will support the creation of a more reliable, secure, and centralized modern data center, helping ensure our team has the technology needed to continue serving individuals and families throughout Yuma, La Paz, and Mohave counties.
