Water changes a landscape. It draws wildlife, reflects the sky and creates a completely different pocket of life within the usually dry Klein Karoo. 💧

Pink Everlasting (Phaenocoma prolifera), also known as Cape Everlasting or Rooisewejaartjie, is known for its papery pink flower heads that retain their colour and shape long after drying.
This hardy indigenous plant is well adapted to dry, exposed conditions and adds a striking splash of colour to the fynbos landscape. 🌸

A very special sighting on the reserve: two adult porcupines with a youngster, out and about during the day. 🦔 Porcupines are mainly nocturnal, so seeing a family group this clearly in daylight is something we do not get to witness often. Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) show one of the most striking differences between males and females among African antelope.
Adult males are much darker with prominent vertical stripes and spiral horns, while females are smaller and chestnut-brown.
IUCN Status: Least Concern.

For World Migratory Bird Day, meet the Greater Striped Swallow (Cecropis cucullata), a familiar summer visitor across much of southern Africa.
These swallows undertake seasonal movements and return to southern breeding areas as conditions become favourable.
Their IUCN status is Least Concern. Watching seasonal arrivals is one of the easiest ways for guides to begin noticing the annual rhythms of the veld. 🐦
