Today, on World Environment Day, we celebrate something that sits at the very heart of Lepogo Lodges: protecting the wilderness that makes this place so extraordinary.

From the very beginning, both Noka Camp and Melote House were designed to tread as lightly as possible on the environment and both operating entirely off-grid, powered by solar.

But sustainability at Lepogo extends far beyond architecture. As a not-for-profit lodge, every success directly supports the protection of 50,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, helping conserve biodiversity, protect endangered species, and preserve one of South Africa's most remarkable wild spaces for future generations.

World Environment Day is a reminder that conservation is not a moment but a responsibility we carry everyday.

Melote House was designed to disappear into the surrounding nature, a safari estate built on the hillside and blended back into the earth itself, with rammed earth walls and every detail thoughtfully connected to the landscape around it.

Days unfold slowly, from unhurried morning game drives through 50,000 hectares of protected wilderness to quiet moments soaking in the views from the villa, where wildlife moves freely below and every space feels connected to the landscape around you.

And as golden hour settles over the Lapalala Wilderness, sundowners are poured, the fire begins to glow, and the luxury of Melote House reveals itself in the simplest moments, uninterrupted views, exceptional hospitality, and the feeling of having the African wilderness entirely to yourself.

A honey badger’s reputation for being fearless is well deserved… but even this sighting left us surprised.

On Sunday, one of the camera traps in Lapalala Wilderness captured a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary. The camera had been set up at an active spotted hyena den to monitor hyena movement. Instead, a lone honey badger casually wandered into frame with absolutely no concern for what might be nearby.

Without hesitation, it disappeared straight into a porcupine burrow. Then suddenly, the honey badger reappeared dragging a porcupine, a rare sighting.

At Lepogo Lodges, these are the kinds of wild and unpredictable moments that make every day on safari different from the last.

Our guests experienced one of those moments where everything goes quiet for a second. No distractions, just the sound of the bush and the presence of one of Africa’s iconic Big 5 standing only metres away.

Buffalo are known for being powerful, unpredictable and fiercely protective of their herd. Everyone took in the moment as the inquisitive buffalo slowly investigated the vehicle before suddenly taking off back into the wilderness. 🐃🌿

Happy Mother’s Day 🌸

Some of the most special moments in the wilderness are the quiet ones between a mother and her young. Whether it’s a lioness keeping a watchful eye over her cubs or an elephant guiding her calf, the bush is filled with incredible displays of motherhood.

We are constantly inspired by these moments in nature, and today we celebrate not only the mothers of the wild, but all the amazing mothers around the world.

We had a weekend full of thrilling sightings, and the ellies absolutely stole a few scenes. These moments are just a glimpse… in person, it’s something else entirely.

A little fact to make you appreciate them even more: elephants can communicate through low-frequency rumbles that travel kilometres, allowing entire herds to stay connected across vast landscapes.
