Dr. Links, the NLSA CEO, speaking at Funda Mzantsi, highlighted the core principles of the programme. In his own words, "Reading has no boundaries." The initiative brings together approximately 300 offenders from national book clubs who compete alongside school learners, university students, and community book clubs. Despite their diverse backgrounds, participants share a common goal: to promote literacy, critical thinking, and rehabilitation through activities such as book reviews, reading competitions, spelling bees, and debates. Through these engagements, Funda Mzantsi demonstrates the transformative power of reading and lifelong learning.

Literacy is more than the ability to read and write, it is the power to access information, make informed choices, participate meaningfully in society and shape a better future.

On International Literacy Day, LIASA celebrates literacy as a cornerstone of an informed, empowered and inclusive nation.

As libraries and information services champion access to knowledge, we recognise the vital role of literacy in nurturing a culture of reading, lifelong learning and informed citizenship. When people can access, understand, evaluate and use information, they are better equipped to learn, participate and contribute to the development of their communities and country.

This is at the heart of what LIASA stands for: promoting freedom of access to information, championing reading and lifelong learning, and contributing to the growth and development of South Africa through excellence in librarianship.
