In Case You Missed It | Empowa Entrepreneurs Funding Summit 2026

Last week, the National Empowerment Fund was represented by Ms Yandiswa Zikalala, Investment Associate at the NEF, during the Empowa Entrepreneurs Funding Summit 2026 at Empowaworx House in Randburg.

Ms Zikalala participated in the executive fireside discussion under the theme β€œThe Full Debt Stack: From DFI Facilities to Commercial Loans”, where she helped unpack the role of development finance institutions in supporting entrepreneurs through the funding journey.

Her contribution focused on the NEF as a development finance entry point, the importance of funding readiness, understanding the right funding product, and challenging common misconceptions around collateral. She also highlighted that fundability is not only about documents, but about the consistency of the business story across applications, financial records and the entrepreneur’s own understanding of the business.

Through platforms such as these, the NEF continues to contribute to practical conversations that help entrepreneurs better understand access to capital, funding readiness and the pathways available for business growth.

Youth Month | Building rural economies where young people can thrive

As South Africa marks Youth Month, the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) proudly celebrates the launch of the USave store in Makubung Village, Mahikeng β€” a milestone that demonstrates how strategic investment can unlock economic opportunities in rural communities.

Developed by NEF-funded entrepreneur Mr Goitseone β€œDucky” Mantsi of Dupet Properties, the project is more than a retail outlet. It is a practical example of how inclusive investment can bring jobs, services and enterprise opportunities closer to communities that have historically been underserved.

The launch was attended by the Chief of Makubung Village, Mme Gomolemo Lekoko; the Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo; MMC Lucas Motlhabane; Mr Jerry Matebesi representing the North West Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Department; representatives from Shoprite Group; community members.

Speaking on behalf of the NEF, Investment Associate Ms Fatima Bruintjies emphasised that the development is a practical demonstration of transformation and inclusive growth in action. She noted that Mr Mantsi saw potential where others may have seen limitations and envisioned a development that would stimulate growth, create opportunities and contribute to the local economy.

Through collaboration between the NEF, Standard Bank and strategic partners, that vision has become a reality.

Reflecting on the journey, Mr Mantsi highlighted that the NEF helped break barriers that many financial institutions struggle to overcome when considering investments in rural communities. He noted that the development has already created employment opportunities for local residents including 50 construction jobs during building phase, and 16 permanent jobs, reduced transport costs for community members who previously travelled to town for basic shopping needs, and attracted strong commercial interest from businesses seeking rental space.

Through investments that stimulate growth in underserved areas, the NEF continues to advance inclusive economic transformation and expand opportunity where it is needed most.
